Florida added 12,910 jobs during June, a substantial drop from recent growth in the Sunshine State's employment during the last several months, according to an influential payroll and employee benefits company.

ADP had pegged the growth during May at 17,440 private-sector jobs.

Last month, Florida added 2,650 goods-producing positions and 10,260 service jobs, the company said.

Natural resources/mining and construction accounted for 2,870 new jobs, professional and business services added 3,110 and trade, transportation and utilities, 2,820. Manufacturers cut 230 positions.

By comparison to Florida's nearly 13,000 positions, California added 31,040; Texas, 23,420; New York, 10,000; and Illinois 8,500.

?All 29 individual U.S. states, plus the District of Columbia, tracked by the ADP Regional Employment Report, also recorded gains of varying degrees in June, with the largest job increases occurring in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois,? said said Ahu Yildirmaz, senior director of the ADP Research Institute, in a statement.

Those six states accounted for more than half of all new private sector jobs for June.

The hiring numbers might be a sneak peek at the June unemployment report scheduled to be released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity on July 19.

Unemployment in Southwest Florida inched up to 6.8 percent in May ? the latest count available ? even though more people were working in the region than the month before.

The jobless rate increased from a revised 6.6 percent in April, but remained well below the 8.5 percent posted in May 2012, according to data released Friday by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

The slight increase ended three months of declines, but analysts noted that the rise is typical for the start of summer here, when school systems, hotels and farms all shed workers temporarily.

An additional 1,300 workers held jobs in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties in May, with gains in retail trades and professional and business services.

But the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed because more people have joined the labor force searching for work, an encouraging sign for the region's economy.

ADP is well-known for tracking job growth in the private sector on a national basis, but it began only recently to break down the numbers state-by-state. Its numbers do not always jibe with government counts.
