Despite my Kansas City roots, I have to admit that Austin has more than their fair share of great BBQ joints. Since SXSW is going on now, let the smoky goodness bless them all.
Iron Works Barbecue
100 Red River St
Austin, TX
(512) 478-4855
Just around the corner from the convention center, this place is the real deal, with the best smoked sausage I have ever eaten. Seriously. Yeah, the rest of the Q is pretty darn good, too.
Named Texas?s Best BBQ as selected by Texas Monthly 2003 and 2008. ALC approved for beef ribs.
Lamberts Downtown Barbeque
401 W 2nd St
Austin, TX
(512) 494-1500
The vibe is a bit more upscale, but the folks are really friendly and service is blazing fast. Great BBQ and killer collard greens. (try them ? prepared perfectly, with smoky, salty ham hocks?mmmmmmm)
Named Texas?s Best BBQ as selected by Texas Monthly 2008: 4 (on the scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest)
Stubbs Bar-B-Q
801 Red River Street
Austin, TX

Christopher ?Stubb? Stubblefield opened his first restaurant in Lubbock in 1968, across from the county fairgrounds. He made his first barbecue in the hickory pit behind his place and filled the jukebox with vintage blues music. It was here that Stubb?s Legendary Bar-B-Q was born?
In the 1970?s, Stubb?s restaurant became the heart of an explosive music scene. Stubbs was ground zero for musicians like Joe Ely and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Other famous musicians who would ?play for their supper? included Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Robert Cray, George Thorogood, Clarence ?Gatemouth? Brown, Linda Ronstadt and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
The Lubbock location is now closed but the legend continues here in Austin.
