Big Wal?nut High School head girls track coach Joe Evener likes to call the high school base?ment hall?ways ?The Joe Evener Indoor Track Train?ing Facil?ity?. Evener might be using the term in jest, but with the weather not suit?able for out?door train?ing, and the main and aux?il?iary gym?na?si?ums occu?pied by boys and girls bas?ket?ball squads, that?s where you find Evener and his girl?s indoor track and field squad prac?tic?ing after school lets out ? in the base?ment hallways.

?We have 32 girls par?tic?i?pat?ing on the indoor team this win?ter,? Evener said. ?We prac?tice every Mon?day and Wednes?day from 4 to 7 p.m. The first half of each ses?sion is run?ning, con?di?tion?ing, stretch?ing and work?ing on fun?da?men?tals, the sec?ond half is in the weight room. Our jumps squad has prac?tices in the aux?il?iary gym at dif?fer?ent?times.?

While the prac?tice facil?i?ties and prac?tice times are lim?ited, Evener said Big Walnut?s girls take the Ohio Asso?ci?a?tion of Track and Cross Coun?try Coaches (OATCCC) indoor track and field sea?son seri?ously, with girls com?ing out to com?pete in the 60-meter hur?dles, 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run; and the Golden Eagle girls? field relay teams in the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Big Wal?nut girls will also com?pete in the shot put, pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Evener said the high school?s indoor track sea?son is really laid back; that attend?ing prac?tice is not manda?tory, but the girls take the indoor track sea?son very seri?ously because it?s such an inte?gral part of the whole cross coun?try and track and field con?di?tion?ing program.

?If a stu?dent ath?lete is play?ing another win?ter sport we don?t worry about them stay?ing in con?di?tion,? Evener said. ?But for fall cross coun?try run?ners and track and field par?tic?i?pants in the spring, indoor track is a great way to stay in con?di?tion over the win?ter months. But I don?t get too excited if only two or three girls show up for a prac?tice. I tell them if they have home?work to do, go do the homework.?

Loose train?ing sched?ule aside, Evener?s indoor squads are com?pet?i?tive enough that they are one of the peren?nial teams to beat at the Cen?tral Dis?trict level. Big Walnut?s girls have won Cen?tral Dis?trict Indoor track titles in 1996, 2000, 2011 and?2012.

While mem?bers of the Golden Eagle squad began prac?tice before Christ?mas break, they will not com?pete until Feb?ru?ary. Their sea?son opens with meets on Feb?ru?ary 2, 9 and 16 at The Ohio State University?s French Field?House.

On Feb?ru?ary 17 the girls travel to the Kenyon Col?lege High School Track Meet at Gam?bier, and on March 2 they?re closer to home at the Cap?i?tal Uni?ver?sity High School Meet.

On Sat?ur?day, March 9, the Girls Indoor Track and Field Team will par?tic?i?pate in the Cen?tral Dis?trict Indoor Cham?pi?onships at Otter?bein University?s Clements Recre?ation & Fit?ness Center.

Fol?low?ing each com?pe?ti?tion the girls wait for num?bers from around the State of Ohio. The top 16 qual?i?fiers in the state in each event at the end of the indoor sea?son are invited to com?pete at the Sat?ur?day, March 16, OATCCC Indoor State Cham?pi?onships held at Akron University.

Over the years Big Wal?nut has pro?duced 72 state qual?i?fiers and 22 state plac?ers; and in 2009 the Big Wal?nut squad placed sixth at state, was fifth in 2010 and placed fourth in?2012.

?The thing that I like about our indoor track and field sea?son is it intro?duces new peo?ple to the spirit of track and field at Big Wal?nut, and also gives them the oppor?tu?nity to meet the more expe?ri?enced girls with?out a lot of pres?sure,? Evener said. ?We?ve also dis?cov?ered that the girls who par?tic?i?pate in our indoor sea?son are ahead of the curve when it?s time to get ready for the out?door sea?son; and from what I can tell so far this year, things are look?ing pretty good both for our indoor and out?door seasons.?
