(AP) ? The indestructible Twinkie appears to be one step closer to a comeback.

Hostess Brands is close to announcing that it has picked two investment firms ? C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management ? as the lead bidders for its Twinkies and other snack cakes, according to a source close to the situation who was not authorized to comment publicly on the talks.

The joint "stalking horse" bid would set the floor for an auction process that lets competitors make better offers. A judge would have to approve any final sale.

After years of management turmoil and turnover, Hostess declared it was going out of business and selling its brands in November. The company, based in Irving, Texas, has already announced separate lead bidders for its other brands. McKee Foods, which makes Little Debbie snack cakes, was picked as the lead bidder for Drake's cakes, which include Devil Dogs, Funny Bones and Yodels.

Flowers Foods, which makes Tastykakes and a variety of breads, was picked as the lead bidder for six of Hostess' major bread brands, including Wonder.

United States Bakery Inc. was picked as the lead bidder for a number of smaller bread brands.

Citing sources close to the situation it did not name, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the offer for Twinkies and other snack cakes by C. Dean Metropoulos and Apollo would be for more than $400 million. The report said that the deal could be disclosed as early as Tuesday. C. Dean Metropoulos owns Pabst Brewing Co.

A representative for Apollo declined to comment. A representative for C. Dean Metropoulos did not return calls for comment.

Hostess has stressed in bankruptcy proceedings that it needs to move quickly in the sale of its brands to capitalize on the outpouring of nostalgia and media coverage prompted by its demise. The longer the cakes and breads are off shelves, the more people will become accustomed to eating cakes and breads by rivals, the company has said.

Franca Giuliani, Feng Shui Consultant

Like so many things in life, change and improvement begins with the process of decluttering. Feng Shui many be an ancient Chinese art, but many of the basic principles are completely valid in terms of making your home a warm and serene place to live and be nurtured. The soothing colors of nature throughout your space, lots of natural light, and maybe the soft and gentle splashing of a small water (for prosperity) feature ? is this heaven? No, it?s Iowa ? I mean your home! Add a melodic wind chime and it might just be heaven. As Feng Shui expert, Franca Giuliani stated, what?s happening inside our homes is a direct reflection of what?s? happening in our lives. Fill your home with things you love and remove anything that is distracting and adds no value to your life. Franca mentioned someone she knew had a sword in their bedroom. Really. Now that?s a distraction!

Is Volkswagen's Super Bowl Ad Racist? - Business Insider

Screengrab from VW's Super Bowl trailer. (Watch ad below.)

Everyone loves a good Super Bowl ad scandal, but Volkswagen is one of the last companies we'd expect to be accused of inappropriate content.

Between a pint-sized Darth Vader and an adorably obese dog, VW and its ad agency, Deutsch LA, have cemented a reputation for making truly great creative work for the Super Bowl.

But eyebrows have been raised over its newly released Super Bowl spot, in which a white Minnesotan man sports a Jamaican accent because he is so happy about his new Volkswagen. He cavorts around the office to the tune of reggae legend Jimmy Cliff's new rendition of the Partridge Family theme song "Get Happy."

Although Soledad O'Brien said that she liked the spot on CNN's "Starting Point," her guest, New York Time's columnist Charles Blow, had a different opinion. "I don't like it at all," he said. "It's like blackface with voices."

Wall Street Journal's Christopher John Farley agreed that the superimposed accent was problematic given that it was "coming out of people who seemingly weren't supposed to be from Jamaica, so it was done as a joke." He even referred to it as the "Jar Jar Binks of 2013."

VW America marketing officer Tim Mahoney told O'Brien, however, that "We actually talked to about 100 Jamaicans in the research, and we had a speech coach on site to make sure it was authentic as possible."

Mahoney also talked about his excitement over signing Cliff on as a collaborator in the piece ? although Cliff doesn't physically appear in the spot, just the 60-second trailer.

We asked Deutsch for comment; we'll update this item when the agency responds.

While "The Force" became a viral success on YouTube, this spot has had mixed reviews on the site. User "MrJJ1030" questioned if the ad was implying that "the power of German engineering is making white Americans turn black?" while Richard Lewis defended the spot, posting: "I am Jamaican and I don't find it racist. As a matter of fact it is quite amusing, most people will tell you that Jamaican and people in the Caribbean are happy people so it demonstrate that happiness of the people can be found in the experience of driving the car."

There's also much discussion over the quality of the accent. While some, claiming to be Jamaican, say the accent is spot on, "Henri Helvetica" commented on Mashable's coverage of the spot that he, a Caribbean, "can tell it's not authentic. This reminds me of the period in advertising where agencies trying to reach a LATINO audience, would make translations word for word - only to not make any sense in the end, or getting any *black* actor to play a Caribbean only to force them to fake the accent (#brutal)."

Helvetica noted that this was a cultural criticism rather than "a racial attack."

USA Today reported that Deutsch LA has one or two other options in case VW decides not to use the ad in the game. "To minimize the risk, we have a backup," Mahoney told USA Today.

Obama to send more aid to Syria

Under fire for not doing more to help Syria?s rebels, President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that he's sending opponents of strongman Bashar al-Assad another $155 million in humanitarian aid and defended his handling of the bloody conflict. Obama said the aid sends a message to the world.

?The relief we send doesn?t say ?Made in America,? but make no mistake?our aid reflects the commitment of the American people,? he said in a video posted on the White House website. The message includes Arabic subtitles.

Obama, who faces chiefly Republican criticism for not offering the rebels American weapons or taking other steps to beat back Assad?s armed forces, said the money would help Syrians under fire and those who have fled to neighboring countries.

?I want to speak directly to the people of Syria,? he said in the video. ?This new aid will mean more warm clothing for children and medicine for the elderly; flour and wheat for your families and blankets, boots and stoves for those huddled in damaged buildings.

?It will mean health care for victims of sexual violence and field hospitals for the wounded,? he continued. ?Even as we work to end the violence against you, this aid will help address some of the immediate needs you face each day."

The new aid will bring total U.S. assistance to Syrian rebels to $365 million.

?We?re under no illusions. The days ahead will continue to be very difficult. But what?s clear is that the regime continues to weaken and lose control of territory,? Obama said.

?The opposition continues to grow stronger," he added. "More Syrians are standing up for their dignity. The Assad regime will come to an end. The Syrian people will have their chance to forge their own future. And they will continue to find a partner in the United States of America.?

While senior Obama aides say Washington has not been arming the rebels, there have been media reports that the CIA and other agencies have been steering arms from third parties to certain opposition forces and working to exclude Islamist extremists?like al-Qaida?from assistance.

- Chancellor Osborne commented that its domestic economy had both internal and external issues and must also address borrowing and deficit topics
- ECB member Costa (Portugal) commented that Portugal public sector reforms were still not enough for sustainable public finances. He added that some of the reforms had been successful but saw risk of reform fatigue in public sector

ECB supported proposals to bail-in banks' creditors and saw merit in separating risk activities from client activities
- OECD Chief Economist Padoan believed major central banks (FED, BOE and BOJ) should continue quantitative easing measures and that fruits from Euro Zone consolidation efforts would be seen sooner rather than later. He added that the BOJ could be bold given the country's fiscal consolidate while fiscal clarity was key to Fed's QE outlook. The view on currency wars taking place was overstating what is occurring. OECD forecasts from Nov remained valid, but risks have shifted.
- China official: Weaker Japanese Yen impact has been muted but trade might get hit
- US envoy to North Korea Davies: Sees no immediate prospect for diplomacy with North Korea

Currencies:
- A relatively quiet European calendar provided an opportunity for recent FX price action to consolidate. The upcoming G20 meeting in February was being cited as the proper venue to discuss FX issues.
- GBP/USD hit 5-month lows of 1.5716 and continued to trade under pressure amid triple dip recession risk after a weak Q4 growth reading last week. Dealers were also taking notice of dovish comments from incoming BOE Gov Carney made over the weekend at Davos.
- The EUR/USD was little changed in subdued trading but remained above the 1.34 handle, which was the breakout level from Friday.
- The JPY currency consolidated from its recent spat of weakness.

Political/ In the Papers:
- (EU) ECB's Coene: Higher than expected LTRO payments could bring down EMU yield spreads further; Euro's level right now is not a problem but may become dangerous; Sees no need for additional monetary easing at the moment; Expects some upside in European and Belgian economies; Ideally, ECB's OMT bond buying program would never be used so as to avoid risk of diminished commitment to austerity

Health care among early leaders in the S&P 500

NEW YORK (AP) ? Health care stocks have started off the year on a tear.

The industry group that includes health care providers, drugmakers and biotechnology companies has advanced 7.3 percent this year, making it the second-best in the Standard and Poor's 500 index, trailing only energy companies. Even drugmakers, traditionally considered a safe-haven play, are outperforming the market.

The rally has solid foundations, but not all companies will benefit equally from the influx of cash. Also, the wide range of stocks in the sector offer investors vastly differing risk and return dynamics.

U.S. health care spending is projected to climb at a faster pace than economic growth in coming years as the population ages and President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act gives millions of Americans greater access to care.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services projects that total health care spending will rise 70 percent over last year's estimated level of $2.8 trillion to $4.8 trillion by 2021. That's almost 20 percent of U.S. gross domestic product.

"There's just a lot more money flowing into health care and we're seeing the markets react accordingly," says Derek Taner, a portfolio manager at Invesco.

President Obama's re-election in November gave the sector a boost by removing the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Republican candidate Mitt Romney had said that he would overturn the act if elected.

The biggest beneficiaries of the act will likely be hospital companies, which have the potential to increase their earnings significantly, says Taner, who manages Invesco's Global Health Care fund.

So-called managed-care companies should also benefit from the increase in spending, though they also face higher taxes and restrictions on how they can price their coverage, so the law will be challenging to them too.

HCA Holdings Inc., a bellwether for the hospital industry, has gained 25 percent so far this year. Tenet Healthcare Corp., a Dallas-based operator of acute care hospitals, has advanced 20 percent.

Drugmakers, often regarded as defensive growth companies by analysts, are also emerging from the doldrums after lagging the broader index for much of the last decade.

Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker by revenue, has returned 31 percent over the last 10 years, compared with 113 percent for the S&P 500.

The big pharmaceutical companies were shunned by investors as they faced challenges from rising research costs and the economic slump in Europe, which prompted governments to try to rein in health care spending.

Drug companies were also hurt by what the industry dubbed the "patent cliff," as an unprecedented number of patents expired on drugs worth billions of dollars in sales. The expiration of patents allows cheaper generic versions of drugs to replace blockbuster products. That hurts sales.

Pfizer lost exclusivity for its cholesterol-fighting drug Lipitor in the U.S. in November 2011. In its most recent earnings report, Pfizer said that U.S. revenues from the drug plunged 87 percent in the third quarter of 2012 to $192 million. The company will release its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday.

The worst of the impact of patent expiration may now be over for the drugmakers, and the market has already factored it into stock prices, says Mark Bussard, a health care analyst at fund manager T. Rowe Price.

"The 'patent cliff' for most of the companies has now come and gone," says Bussard, who is a physician by training. "Some of the largest losses to generic competition are in the rear-view mirror now."

Approvals for first-of-a-kind drugs have also been climbing as drugmakers continue to pursue an emerging business model focused on treatments for rare and hard-to-treat diseases.

The Food and Drug Administration approved 39 new drugs last year, up from 30 the year before and the highest annual tally since 1997, when the agency also approved 39 drugs.

In addition to being relatively low-risk investments, due to the steady demand for drugs, Big Pharma also pays big dividends.

The largest drug companies in the S&P 500 have higher dividend yields than the broader index, which yields 2.1 percent. Pfizer currently has a 3.6 percent yield and Merck & Co. yields 4 percent.

Biotechnology companies are possibly the most exciting companies in the sector and are also advancing.

Investing in this sector can be challenging, though, as the vast majority of drugs being developed don't work out.

"It's probably unwise ... to try to pick the individual winner," says Sam Isaly, the manager of Eaton Vance's Worldwide Health Sciences Fund. "It depends on whether you're a lotto player or not."

While the Affordable Care Act ensures that money will flow into the industry in the near term, that spending can't keep rising exponentially. At some point, the focus will turn to the cost of the reforms, particularly if the initial spending estimates are exceeded, causing renewed uncertainty for the industry.

"That's a longer-term concern that is going to come into play at some point," says Invesco's Taner. "Right now we're in the honeymoon period. People aren't thinking about that."

And if history is a guide, the cost estimates will likely prove too low.

Upon passing the Medicare bill in 1965, the House Ways and Means Committee estimated total program expenditures would amount to $1.3 billion in 1967. That estimate proved to be "wildly optimistic," with the actual cost coming in at $4.6 billion, according to research by Citigroup health care analysts.

To counter the rising costs, governments and employers will increasingly try to shift more of the cost to individual consumers, transforming the industry from an "employer-driven insurance market" to an "employee-driven consumer market," says Eddie Yoon of Fidelity.

"The companies that are the most innovative in helping drive costs down are going to be the growth companies of tomorrow," says Yoon, who manages the investment firm's Select Health Care Portfolio.

Thousands march for gun control in Washington

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Thousands of people, many holding signs with names of gun violence victims and messages such as "Ban Assault Weapons Now," joined a rally for gun control on Saturday, marching from the Capitol to the Washington Monument.

Participants were led by Mayor Vincent Gray and other officials Saturday morning, and the crowd stretched for about two blocks along Constitution Avenue. Police blocked off half the road.

Participants held signs reading "Gun Control Now" and "Stop NRA," among other messages. Other signs were simple and white, with the names of victims of gun violence.

About 100 residents were expected from Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six teachers at a school in December. The rally was organized in response to that shooting.

Once the crowd arrived at the monument, speakers called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan told the crowd it's not about taking away Second Amendment gun rights, but about gun safety and saving lives. He said he and President Barack Obama would do everything they could to enact gun control policies.

"We must act, we must act, we must act," Duncan said.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.'s non-voting representative in Congress, said the gun lobby can be stopped. The crowd chanted back, "Yes, we can."

Norton said the nation didn't act after previous mass killings, but she said "we the people," won't give up this time.

"We are all culpable if we do nothing now," Norton said

Participant Kara Baekey of Norwalk, Conn., said that when she heard about the Newtown shooting, she immediately thought of her two young children. She said she decided she must take action, and that's why she joined the march.

"I wanted to make sure this never happens at my kids' school or any other school," Baekey said. "It just can't happen again."

James Agenbroad, 78, of Garrett Park, Md., carried a handwritten sign on cardboard that read "Repeal the 2nd Amendment." He called it the only way to stop mass killings because he thinks the Supreme Court will strike down any other restrictions on guns.

"You can repeal it," he said. "We repealed prohibition."

Molly Smith, the artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner organized the march. Organizers said that in addition to the 100 from Newtown, they expected buses of participants from New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. Others are flying in from Seattle, San Francisco and even Alaska.

While she's never organized a political march before, Smith said she was compelled to press for a change in the law. The march organizers support President Barack Obama's call for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines as well as for universal background checks for gun sales. They also want lawmakers to require gun safety training for all buyers of firearms.

"With the drum roll, the consistency of the mass murders and the shock of it, it is always something that is moving and devastating to me. And then, it's as if I move on," Smith said. "And in this moment, I can't move on. I can't move on.

"I think it's because it was children, babies," she said. "I was horrified by it."

After the Connecticut shootings, Smith posted something on Facebook and drew more support to do something. The group One Million Moms for Gun Control, the Washington National Cathedral and two other churches eventually signed on to co-sponsor the march. Organizers have raised more than $46,000 online to pay for equipment and fees to stage the rally.

Lawmakers from the District of Columbia and Maryland were scheduled to speak Saturday. Actress Kathleen Turner was expected to appear, along with Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund and Colin Goddard, a survivor from the Virginia Tech massacre.

Smith said she supports a comprehensive look at mental health and violence in video games and films. But she said the mass killings at Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., all start with guns.

"The issue is guns. The Second Amendment gives us the right to own guns, but it's not the right to own any gun," she said. "These are assault weapons, made for killing people."

SmackDown results: While Del Rio won Elimination Tag Team Match, Big Show unleashed a giant attack when it ?counted?

SACRAMENTO, Calif.?? With Royal Rumble two days away, The Rock and WWE Champion CM Punk both stepped back into the SmackDown spotlight, while World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio suffered the wrath of The World?s Largest Athlete.

(PHOTOS)
After WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No?s graduation from Dr. Shelby?s Anger Management course led to a worldwide hug-off on Raw, Bryan and Kane emerged to address speculation that they?d gone soft. Unified in their resolve to dominate Team Rhodes Scholars in their title match at Sunday's pay-per-view (MATCH PREVIEW), the champs began to argue over which one of them would go on to win the Royal Rumble Match and go on to main event WrestleMania.

Big Show interrupted, insisting he would ?squish? World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio in their Last Man Standing Rematch at Royal Rumble. He then said that if either of the WWE Tag Team Champions were successful in the free-for-all and challenged him, the only plans they would be able to make would be for retirement.

Just as Big Show was attempting to kick Bryan & Kane out of ?his? ring, Team Rhodes Scholars emerged. Believing that their winning the WWE Tag Team Titles at Royal Rumble was a foregone conclusion, the outspoken duo suggested they join forces with Big Show to decimate Team Hell No post haste.?

Del Rio emerged to even the odds. But before all ?Hell? broke loose, SmackDown General Manager Booker T created the main event showdown: Big Show & Team Rhodes Scholars vs. Team Hell No & Alberto Del Rio in a Six-Man Elimination Tag Team Match!

Moments later, Big Show tried to get the jump on Del Rio, leading to more mind games between the World Heavyweight Champion and his giant No. 1 contender.

Attention shoppers: Another credit card fee is here

16 hrs.

It could soon cost you more to shop with a credit card at some stores. As of this Sunday, Jan. 27, merchants who accept credit cards issued by Visa and MasterCard will be allowed to add a service charge to the purchase price.

Visa and MasterCard had always prohibited merchants from doing this. They agreed to change the rules and allow the surcharge as part of the settlement of an antitrust suit brought by retailers.

The surcharge is supposed to equal the actual cost of processing the credit card transaction, which is typically 1.5 to 3 percent. Under the agreement, the fee is capped at 4 percent. The surcharge can vary based on the type of card. For example, it could be higher for a rewards card or premier card.

Merchants still cannot add a surcharge to debit card transactions.

The big question is: Will any stores do this? Should you worry about paying a credit card surcharge?

?We have discussed the settlement with many, many merchants, and not a single merchant we have spoken to plans to surcharge,? Craig Sherman, spokesman for the National Retail Federation (NRF), said in a statement. The NRF was not involved in the class action lawsuit.

NBC News contacted some of the country?s largest retailers. Wal-Mart,?Target, Sears and Home Depot said they have no plans to add a credit card surcharge.

Credit card surcharges are banned by law in 10 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.

Visa and MasterCard have rules that require retailers to handle credit cards the same way in all of their stores across the country. That means a chain with stores in any of the 10 states where a surcharge is banned would not be able to have a surcharge at any of its stores.

The National Retail Federation points out that under terms of the settlement, a merchant who adds a surcharge to purchases on a Visa or MasterCard would have to do the same with American Express cards. But AMEX prohibits surcharge fees. So a merchant who accepts American Express as well as Visa/MasterCard would not be able to surcharge any of those cards.

?The bottom line is that very few retailers would be able to surcharge under the settlement, and that the vast majority don?t want to surcharge even if they could,? the NRF?s Sherman said.

Ed Mierzwinski, Director of Consumer Programs at U.S. PIRG agrees.

?In the brick-and-mortar world, no one who does any sort of volume business is going to want to surcharge because it will drive their customer crazy and slow down transactions,? Mierzwinski said.

In fact, most consumer advocates believe that except for some small retailers, a credit card surcharge is a non-issue in the short-term.

But Edgar Dworsky, founder of ConsumerWorld.org, worries that over time surcharges will gain traction.

?It?s predictable what?s going to happen,? he said. ?We?re at the top of the hill and we?re going to start going down that slippery slope.?

Dworsky points out that stores factor in the cost of processing credit cards when they price their merchandise. Charging for that again, he said, would be double-dipping, unless stores rolled back their prices ? which no one expects them to do.

?We shouldn?t have gotten to the point, but unfortunately because of the court settlement we have,? Dworsky told me. ?There?s no one standing up for consumers and saying that this is really bad.?

Dworsky points to Australia, where surcharging credit card use began in 2003. At first, few merchants charged the fee.? His research shows that approximately one-third of the sellers there ? including some hotels, supermarkets, department stores and utilities ? now charge extra to use a credit card.?

What about disclosures??
The advocacy group Consumer Action has published a booklet on credit card checkout fees. It warns shoppers to be on the lookout for these fees and advises them to express their dissatisfaction.?Customers shouldn?t stand for it,? said Ruth Susswein Consumer Action?s deputy director of national priorities. ?Our advice is to tell them you don?t like the fee and this makes you want to take your business elsewhere.?

The new rules from Visa and MasterCard require retailers who apply a credit card surcharge to post a notice at the store?s entrance. The exact percentage of the surcharge does not need to be disclosed until the point of sale. The customer receipt must list the amount of the surcharge.

Online stores with a surcharge will not be required to have a notice on the home page. They only need to alert shoppers about this when they reach the page where credit cards are first mentioned. In most cases, that means the final step of checkout when the purchase is being completed.

Not the end of this story?
The settlement that allows merchants to impose a surcharge is only preliminary. The court has yet to issue its final ruling in this case. That?s expected later this year.?

Once that happens, various retailers and business groups plan to challenge the settlement. That could drag into late 2014.

For now, the possibility that the settlement could be modified will probably keep most businesses of any size from instituting credit card fees.

?We?re not convinced this is going to be an issue,? Consumer Action?s Susswein told me. ?They may never do it, but as individual consumers we need to be aware.?

A boost to your mobile signal

Jan. 25, 2013 ? When using your mobile phone, it doesn't take much to lose that precious signal -- just turning a corner or riding on a train can be enough. EU-funded research is developing new technologies to eradicate those annoying 'black holes' in wireless coverage, while freeing up some mobile network capacity at the same time.

We live in a 24/7, always-on, mobile and wireless world. Wherever we go we are connected -- to each other, to the web, to all our favourite apps, to whatever data we need, exactly when we need it.

Or so we like to think. The reality is quite different. There are corners of our homes where the web won't work. There are black spots in towns and huge holes in the wireless network in more remote areas. Coverage is far from complete.

To compound the problem, even when they have a good signal, smartphones often struggle to download the data they need because the mobile networks are saturated. The airwaves are at full capacity.

Europe has always been at the forefront of innovation in telecommunications and a pioneer of the next generation of mobile technologies. So watch out for 'femtocells' -- small mobile telephony cells that improve both connectivity and coverage at a local level.

Better signals

The principle is quite simple. Instead of mobile operators having to invest millions in powerful long-range base stations to extend coverage over a wide area, they can move mobile connections to more localised small cells. A residential femtocell, for example, would improve coverage for just one house, or perhaps a block of flats. A commercial small cell might boost mobile connectivity for a whole office while a mobile femtocell could provide passengers on public transport with a strong and static signal (sparing their battery and eradicating sudden drops in signal).

Femtocells are far more than mobile booster stations; they can also help to divert data traffic off the mobile airwaves. This offloading creates more network capacity. Wired into the fixed line broadband network, a femtocell can reroute data and voice traffic down wires, freeing up the precious airwaves for even more traffic.

Fast forward

Significant research is still required to turn these practical ideas into reality. There are so many dots to join up. How do you prevent femtocell signals from interfering with signals to and from main base stations? How do you decide whether to route connections through fixed lines? What protocols should you use in the layers of the 'communications stack'?

The FP7 'Broadband-evolved Femto networks' ( Befemto) project unites several industry giants in mobile telecommunications equipment, mobile operators, small companies with key technologies and several technology R&D organisations to solve these issues and demonstrate prototype femtocells at work.

'Europe recognises that mobile connectivity is a powerful social and economic driver,' explains Dr Thierry Lestable, the project's coordinator. 'EU support for the development of cheap technologies to enhance and boost innovative services is really important for growth, not just growth for telecoms manufacturers and providers, but for the entire economy. Most businesses rely now on mobility and permanent connectivity.'

'By adding femtocells and small cells into the mobile network mix we make it possible for mobile operators to improve their spectrum efficiencies through heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and seamless integration of the fixed line telecoms network,' Dr Lestable continues. 'But this rerouting has to be optimised and intelligent. We have been developing and testing self-managed femtocell connections which are programmed to pick their wireless protocols and frequencies and route traffic depending on a whole host of contextual data.'

Befemto has developed advanced cooperation, self-organising, healing and switching algorithms. The built-in intelligence allows femtocells to optimise their use of radio frequencies (depending on traffic densities, for example) and fixed broadband networks. They can also communicate with macro-basestations without any interference or effect on macro signal quality or capacity.

'These new algorithms allow femtocell networks to work together to provide top quality coverage for users and support seamless, low-power and low-cost relief enhancement to the mobile service,' Dr Lestable remarks. 'We are focusing on the newly launched LTE or 4G networks because customers are paying a premium for these and will expect a true broadband experience: fast, reliable and unlimited access to everything everywhere. Femtocells, and small cells will allow operators to meet these expectations and lower their operational costs at the same time.'

Active all areas

The project partners have applied for an impressive 12 patents for the technologies developed within the project. These patents range from novel network monitoring software to mobile traffic optimisation algorithms. The project has also improved radio-frequency front-end technology to improve signal quality and reduce interference between femtocells and other wireless devices.

On the international stage Befemto has played an important role in proposing and supporting industry standards for femtocell protocols and the mechanisms for migrating data traffic between mobile, WiFi and fixed line architectures. The project partners have made a total of 27 direct contributions to 3GPP, the international standards organisation for mobile technology.

The partners have also run five international workshops worldwide and two training schools to share the project's findings and build a common understanding of these technologies within the community. The partners have published more than 70 international papers.

The Befemto technologies and system architectures have been tested in five pilot demonstrations. Trial results show that femtocells significantly reduce load on mobile networks while boosting signal strength and quality at a local level. The work of the project will support mobile operators to reach two major technical targets: high spectral efficiency (8 bits/s/Hz per cell) -- meaning more and better use of scarce airwaves -- and a maximum mean transmit power of 10 mW -- for lower levels of interference.

'Most importantly, our trials also prove to mobile network operators that the small cell model is a good one,' says Dr Lestable. 'We've looked at several different business models for their deployment; no matter which one you follow, femto- and small cells will save mobile operators money and help them to create value -- a sure way to get them to market.'

It looks like that dream of 24/7 fast connectivity could be just around the corner -- a corner that no longer gets in the way of your calls.

J.J. Abrams set to direct next "Star Wars" film

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - J.J. Abrams will direct the next "Star Wars" film for Disney, taking stewardship of one of Hollywood's most iconic and lucrative film franchises, an individual with knowledge of the production told TheWrap.

"Argo" director Ben Affleck was also in contention, another individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap.

Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm last year and announced it would make new "Star Wars" films, fans, members of the media and industry executives have speculated about which director would take the job. Abrams' name always came up, but he told Entertainment Weekly in November that he wasn't going to take the job.

He did say "Star Wars" was the first movie that "blew my mind" in terms of special effects.

Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams, one of the most successful directors and producers in Hollywood - and a man beloved by fanboys. He runs one of the industry's top production companies, Bad Robot, and created or co-created television franchises like "Lost," "Fringe" and "Alias." He has also directed film spectacles "Mission: Impossible III," "Star Trek" and "Super 8."

The lure of the Jedi was too strong, and it will no doubt complicate his relationship with Paramount, where Bad Robot is a top supplier. Abrams has been feverishly working on "Star Trek Into Darkness," his second Star Trek film since he rebooted the franchise in 2009. "Into Darkness," still in post-production, opens May 18.

Though he has several producing jobs in front of him, Abrams had been uncommitted as a director. He will have to jump right into "Star Wars," which Disney has slated for a 2015 release. "Little Miss Sunshine" screenwriter Michael Arndt is penning the script.

Reached by TheWrap, Lynne Hale, spokeswoman for Lucasfilm, declined to comment immediately. Neither CAA, which represents Abrams, nor Bad Robot immediately responded to requests for comment.

Female thin bodies like men more than women

University of Granada

A study conducted at the University of Granada has demonstrated that men like female thinness more than women and they find female overweight more unpleasant than women. In addition, the study revealed that women who are not comfortable with their body perceive women with a "normal" body i.e. women with a healthy weight as a threat. Specifically, when these women see a "normal" body they experience feelings of displeasure and lack of control, since they feel they have not any control on their own body and cannot make it be as they want.

This research study was conducted by researchers at the Department of Personality, Evaluation and Psychological Treatment of the University of Granada. The authors found that women who are not comfortable with their body feel embarrassed and uneasy when they see themselves in a picture or video, especially if they are imitating the poses of a professional model.

A Study in 671 University Students

To carry out this study, the researchers performed four experimental studies with university students. As many as 671 students participated in the study. A total of 550 students participated in the first two studies (408 women and 142 men), 61 participated in the third study (28 women highly discomforted with their body and 33 moderately unsatisfied with their body) and 60 in the fourth study (30 healthy women satisfied with their body and 30 women with bulimia nervosa unsatisfied with their body).

Blanca Ortega-Roldn Oliva one of the authors of this study explained that the bodies that most like men and women are those of professional female models with a normal weight. "Men and women found these bodies highly pleasing and stimulating, although they made them feel a lack of control. This means that a sexy and stimulating body makes people feel a lack of control, as these bodies are considered difficult to attain or even unattainable".

On the other hand, the study revealed that the body of a model with a normal weight negatively affects women that are highly unsatisfied with their body. Thus, unsatisfied women consider these bodies "unpleasant, very activating and unattainable (perception of lack of control)". The reason for this perception is that these women cannot objectively evaluate a normal body in emotional terms, since they cannot avoid comparing themselves with it. This makes them feel upset, as they feel their body does not meet their beauty standards.

The Ideal Woman in Spain

In the light of the results of this study, the University of Granada researchers have demonstrated that the ideal woman in Spain does not coincide with that proposed by the media, which is currently the aesthetic and social standard. Thus, "Spanish men and women prefer the bodies of healthy models with normal weight". This fact "should be taken into account by the advertising and fashion industry and governments, so that they help prevent the growing incidence of body dissatisfaction and the associated eating disorders", the researchers recommend.

Finally, social pressure on women's body might come from men, since they prefer thin women and stigmatize female obesity more than women. "Therefore, the conclusions drawn in this study should have an impact on programs aimed at preventing body dissatisfaction among women", Ortega-Roldn concludes.

Delete All Those Annoying "Recent Recipients" from iOS Mail

Delete All Those Annoying "Recent Recipients" from iOS MailEvery time you go to type an email address into iOS' Mail app, you get a giant list of everyone you've ever contacted that might fit the letters you've typed. This can get annoying very quickly. Here's how to delete those from your phone for good.

If you're using iOS 6, this is an easy tip for getting rid of those addresses. When you see one that you don't want saved in your recents, just tap the blue arrow next to it. From that new screen, you can just tap the big red "Remove From Recents" button to get rid of it completely. It's obvious once you think about it, yet I never thought to actually click on that blue arrow to see what was behind it.

Sadly, there's no way to mass delete recent addresses, you have to go one-by-one?but at least it's something. Hit the link to read more.

Tropical Storm Oswald's heavy rains have caused flooding in Queensland, Australia and NASA's TRMM satellite measured almost two feet of rain fell in certain areas.

Tropical cyclone Oswald's sustained winds have never been greater than 35 knots (~40.2 mph) but the storm's extreme rainfall has resulted in widespread flooding in Australia over northern Queensland. Many roads have been reported flooded resulting in some communities being cut off.

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a satellite that can measure rainfall from space. TRMM-based satellite precipitation estimates are created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. within about seven hours of observation time. Hal Pierce of NASA Goddard created a rainfall image from a Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (MPA) for the period from January 15 to 22, 2013. The analysis showed that Oswald and its remnants had dropped over 600 mm (~23.6 inches) of rain in areas of the Cape York Peninsula near the Gulf of Carpentaria.

According to a report on news.com.au, travelers were requested to cancel plans to go to the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. Many rivers have flooded and dirt roads are mired in mud over a distance of 560 kilometers (348 miles) that stretch from Laura to Bamaga. Rainfall totals over the Cape York Peninsula to Cardwell were as high as 200mm (7.8 inches) to 300 mm (11.8 inches), which fell south of the town of Innisfail.

3-D fireworks of a star: Astronomers reconstruct journey of emitted gas

Jan. 24, 2013 ? In 1901 the star GK Persei gave off a powerful explosion that has not stopped growing and astonishing ever since. Now a team of Spanish and Estonian astronomers has reconstructed the journey of the emitted gas in 3D which, contrary to predictions, has hardly slowed down its speed of up to 1,000 km/s after all this time.

Thanks to the images captured from the Isaac Newton Telescope and the Nordic Optical Telescope in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), a European team of astronomers has constructed a three dimensional map of the remnant of a nova, or in other words, what was left of the star after its explosion. The results have just been published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The protagonist of this story is the star GK Persei situated at 'just' 1,300 light years away from Earth. It is also known as Nova Persei 1901 because a strong thermonuclear eruption occurred on its surface on the 21st February 1901. On that day astronomers observed how its brightness suddenly increased to such an extent that it became one of the brightest stars in the skies.

The surprising thing is that the explosion created remaining material made up of gaseous knots, which become visible in 1916. "From then the visual spectacle has been similar to that of a firework display seen in slow motion," claims Miguel Santander, researcher at Spanish National Observatory and coauthor of the study.

After patient work to gather images, the team was able to measure the movements of more than 200 knots as well as the radial velocity using the Doppler effect, which allows to determine if they are getting closer or moving further away from us. In this way the 3D map of the nova was created and its dynamic was analysed.

"Such data are rarely available in astrophysics because as a general rule apparent expansion or, in other words, in the layout of the sky, the majority of objects cannot be seen," outlines another of the authors, Romano Corradi, from the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands.

An unexpected result

In any case, the main result of this work "is that the gas seems to be moving further away in a ballistic or free manner and is hardly slowing down, contrary to what was thought in previous studies," comments the lead author of the investigation, Tiina Liimets of the Tartu Observatory in Estonia.

Until now it was thought that the gas from the explosion would slow down "significantly" due to the large quantity of matter in its path that the star has expelled previously. However, its speed has remained between a range of 600 and 1000 kilometres per second.

Long before the explosion in 1901, more than one hundred thousand years ago, GK Persei had already undergone a massive transformation from a red giant to a white dwarf. This process expelled its external layers forming a planetary nebula, which is a giant gas cloud within which the nova is now growing in 3D.
