Dry weather warnings on road, fireworks

CLEVELAND - The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is using the digital highway signs to warn smoking drivers not to toss lit cigarettes out the window because of the "high fire risk."

You may have noticed the signs along the highway that went up on July 1. ODOT officials said the reminder, ?High fire risk. Do not toss lit cigarettes," will continue to warn drivers until the middle of the month.

The highway sings are usually used for travel times, traffic situations and amber alerts.

"This is a different type of message today. We're happy to be partnering with our friends over at the State Fire Marshal's Office to get this message out to motorists," explained ODOT spokeswoman Amanda Lee.

The dry brush on the side of the highway and a lit cigarette is a recipe for disaster. Northeast Ohio is nearly four inches shy of our normal rainfall so far this year.

Shaker Heights officials are so concerned about their fireworks display that they are watering the area where the fireworks will take place on Wednesday night.

"In my career, 28 years, I can't remember a decision to launch the fireworks based on the drought," said Shaker Heights Fire Chief Kevin Jacobs.

City officials in Kent already canceled their July 7 fireworks display, concerned about the extreme dry conditions.
