Georgia's Lasha Shavdatuashvili and North Korean An Kum-Ae both claimed gold on a day of shocks and a refereeing controversy at the Olympic judo competition on Sunday.
Shavdatuashvili won the men's under-66kg division, less than a year after progressing from the junior ranks to the seniors.
And An went one better than four years ago in Beijing as she added under-52kg gold to the silver already in her trophy cabinet.
But it was a day marked by the failure of the top seeds, as well as a row over Masashi Ebinuma and Cho Jun-Ho's under-66kg quarter-final, which was awarded first to the South Korean, and then to the Japanese world champion.
Cho was awarded a judges decision before the International Judo Federation's Refereeing Commission reminded them about an Ebinuma attack that should have been scored.
The three judges reversed their decision and gave the win to Ebinuma, sparking consternation in the stands. Ebinuma went on to win bronze alongside South Korea's Cho Jun-Ho, who was philosophical about the events.
"Initially I thought I had won but when it was reversed I was a little sad," he said.
"But I had my remaining fights to focus on and I hoped (Ebinuma) would get a good result because he beat me. We both won bronze so I'm happy."
In the under-66kg, three of the top four seeds fell by the wayside before the quarter-finals, leaving Shavdatuashvili to emerge from the debris to claim a brilliant gold medal.
Until six months ago, the 20-year-old had never competed at a senior international tournament but he showed no nerves as he tore into his opposition.
"When fighting I attacked and took risks because I didn't care who my opponents were, whether world champions, European champions or even Olympic champions," he said.
"I wanted to show what's inside me and that's why I was risking everything."
In the final he beat three-time European champion Miklos Ungvari of Hungary with a small score (yuko) from an inner-leg sweep (ouchi-gari).
Before that he had stunned world champion Ebinuma in the semi-finals with a rotating rear throw (ura-nage) for the maximum technical knock-out score, ippon.
Shavdatuashvili became the sixth Georgian to win judo gold, and the third since the country gained independence from the Soviet Union.
"I'm happy to add to Georgia's list of gold medals but of course these don't just belong to judo athletes but to the whole country," he said.
"I wish other athletes would add more gold medals and other medals to our Olympic museum."
The women's competition was not quite so dramatic but did involve similar carnage among the leading contenders.
All four top seeds crashed out before the quarters but the final was still contested between two fighters who had earnt Olympic silver in Beijing four years ago.
An, who was beaten by China's Xian Dongmei in Beijing, triumphed this time against Cuba's Yanet Bermoy, who had reached the final in the under-48kg division in China.
The fight went to a sudden death golden score period with An snatching victory with a yuko from a counter-attack.
It meant she joined illustrious compatriot Kye Sun-Hui as an Olympic gold medallist in judo.
"I'm following in the footsteps of the queen of North Korean judo and I wanted to honour her," said An.
"By winning gold I was able to reward my country for what I have been given by them.
"I learnt from (Kye's) strong spirit and determination and I needed to work hard to return what earned from my country."
France's Priscilla Gneto and Rosalba Forciniti of Italy took the two bronze medals.

Dubai-based real estate giant Emaar Properties said on Sunday it posted an 82 percent surge in net profits in the first half of 2012 as retail and hospitality grew, costs fell and a write-off was not repeated.
The developer of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, saw its net profit in the first six months rise to 1.22 billion dirhams ($332.4 million), compared with 671 million dirhams ($182.8 million) in the corresponding period last year, a company statement said.
Net profits in the second quarter of 2012 more than doubled to 614 million dirhams ($167.3 million), compared with 250 million dirhams ($68.1 million) in the second quarter of 2011, when the company wrote off 172 million dirhams ($46.87 million) investment in its loss-making Dubai Bank.
Revenues in the first half stood at 3.921 billion dirhams ($1.06 billion), two percent down from 4.014 billion dirhams last year, while costs dropped to 1.723 billion dirhams ($469.48 million), compared with 2.023 billion dirhams ($551.2 million).
The hospitality and retail sectors contributed 51 percent to revenues, with rental and retail businesses, mainly malls, generating earnings of 1.3 billion dirhams ($354 million), 23 percent up from the same period last year.
Dubai Mall hosted around 30 million visitors in the first six months of 2012.
Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, said that Dubai's property is turning around after crashing in 2009 because the global financial crisis dried up available finance for the overheated sector.
"The real estate market in Dubai is turning around, led by the robust performance of key growth sectors including aviation, retail, hospitality, tourism and foreign trade," he said.
"The city's appeal to high net worth individuals as the ideal destination for a home is also gaining strength. Emaar's financial results for the first half of the year reflects the growing strength of Dubai's economy," he added.
The company said it recorded sales exceeding 1.6 billion dirhams ($436 million) in the first half of 2012 in Dubai, approximately five times more than the same period in 2011.
A major developer throughout Dubai's five-year real estate frenzy, Emaar has succeeded in diversifying its business, focusing on hospitality and retail, while also spreading its real estate business activities abroad.

The LA Times reveals yet another Washington-led proxy war, this time in Africa. Privatised and essentially unaccountable, this is another example of the US never learning from history. Arming and training such a force will almost inevitably blow back on the West at some point:
The soldiers stood at attention, rifles at their sides, as U.S. Army Maj. Gen. David Hogg walked down the ranks, eyeing the men heading off to fight in Somalia.
?You will push ? the miscreants from that country, so Somalia can once again be free of tyranny and terrorism,? he told them, according to a video of the May ceremony. ?We know you are ready.?
These weren?t American soldiers. They were from impoverished Sierra Leone in West Africa. But Hogg, a top U.S. Army commander for Africa, was in Freetown, Sierra Leone?s capital, because this was largely an American operation.
Nearly 20 years after U.S. Army Rangers suffered a bloody defeat in Somalia, losing 18 soldiers and two Black Hawk helicopters, Washington is once again heavily engaged in the chaotic country. Only this time, African troops are doing the fighting and dying.
The United States is doing almost everything else.
The U.S. has been quietly equipping and training thousands of African soldiers to wage a widening proxy war against the Shabab, the Al Qaeda ally that has imposed a harsh form of Islamic rule on southern Somalia and sparked alarm in Washington as foreign militants join its ranks.
Officially, the troops are under the auspices of the African Union. But in truth, according to interviews by U.S. and African officials and senior military officers and budget documents, the 15,000-strong force pulled from five African countries is largely a creation of the State Department and Pentagon, trained and supplied by the U.S. government and guided by dozens of retired foreign military personnel hired through private contractors.
Like CIA drone strikes in Pakistan and Somalia, and the overthrow of Moammar Kadafi?s regime in Libya, the U.S. backing of African troops in Somalia is an example of how, after a decade of ground combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Obama administration is trying to achieve U.S. military goals with minimal risk of American deaths and scant public debate.
The U.S. can underwrite the war in Somalia for a relative pittance ? the cost over four years has been less than $700 million, a tenth of what the military spends in Afghanistan in a month ? but the price tag is growing. More than a third of the U.S. assistance has been spent since early 2011.
?
No U.S. military personnel are deployed to Somalia with the African troops. Instead, the State Department pays a private firm to hire the retired foreign military personnel who advise the troops on tactics and operations.
?The U.S. is willing to be very open-minded about whatever the key components are that need to be funded, without which this mission would fail,? said Michael C. Stock, president of Bancroft Global Development, the Washington-based company that hires the combat advisors. ?When it comes to things like ammunition, when it comes to the mentoring and advising that we do, the U.S. is really playing the most important role.?
Bancroft now has about 75 advisors in Somalia, double the number from a year ago, Stock said.
The only major part of the Somalia operation that the U.S. doesn?t supply or pay for are the troops? salaries and logistical expenses, officials say. Those are handled by the European Union and the United Nations, although the U.N. contribution is partially funded by U.S. dues. Only Washington is willing to provide lethal aid, officials and contractors say.
?It?s incredible bang for the dollar that we?ve gotten,? said Michael Bittrick, a State Department official who oversees the effort. ?It isn?t just about getting infantry shooters to go do their work. We?re training their intel people, we?re training their indirect fire people, we?re training their medical people, we?re training their engineers.?
That training is done mostly by U.S. contractors and small teams of American military personnel before the troops deploy from their home countries. But the military also brings African soldiers to the U.S. for training.
In December, the Pentagon brought eight Ugandan soldiers and one of Bancroft?s advisors to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., to train them to use the Army?s Raven drone. The hand-launched, propeller-powered drone beams live video back to a laptop computer when used on the battlefield, as it was last month in Afgooye.

OXFORD, Mass. (AP) ? A man who had recently separated from his wife shot his two children, killing his 7-year-old daughter, before committing suicide, prosecutors said.
A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their two-story Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said. Benway's 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in serious condition.
Benway's wife, Kelleen, returned home after the shootings, unaware of what had happened, and found a swarm of police cruisers and television crews, Early said. She was taken to the children's hospital, where authorities told her the fates of her children and husband.
Neighbors told the Telegram & Gazette that Daryl Benway's brother Shawn lived on the first floor of the home with his wife and mother. Shawn Benway called 911 to report the shootings, Early said.
Daryl and Kelleen Benway separated three or four weeks ago but were still married, Early said. He said he couldn't speculate on a motive.
No restraining orders had been filed against Daryl Benway, and he had no criminal record, the DA said. He had a gun license that expired in 1999, Early said.
"It doesn't get much worse than this," Early said. "It's a horrible scene, a horrible situation."

TAIPEI, Taiwan --?
Hundreds of demonstrators in the Taiwanese capital Taipei have gathered to demand the release of a Taiwanese businessman arrested in China. The man is accused of broadcasting programming about the banned spiritual group Falun Gong on a Chinese TV station.
China's official Xinhua News Agency says that Chung Ding-pan was detained for endangering public security, after he broadcast the pro-Falun Gong programming in Jiangxi province.
No details were given on how the 53-year-old gained access to the Jiangxi station's signal.
At Monday's protest, Falun Gong spokeswoman Chu Wan-chi said Chung was in China to visit relatives. She said she had no information on the allegations against him, but acknowledged he was a Falun Gong follower.
China banned Falun Gong in 1999 as an evil cult and persecutes its adherents.

MASSEY UNIVERSITY?S ECENTRE PLAYED HOST to the ?Startup Weekend? business innovation event on the weekend of 15 June at the Albany Innovation Campus.
The event was sold out, with nearly 90 people pitching business ideas. Some 12 groups then formed around the 12 best-received ideas, and the 54-hour marathon to create a Startup business was on.
Many ideas were based on social media and mobile apps. The weekend was also trending on Twitter and a simultaneous Startup Weekend was streaming live from San Diego. It was truly a social media event.
Event organiser Jessica Gillon said beforehand that drama was expected. By Saturday morning tension was already starting to build, with some team members even defecting to other groups.
However, groups then re-established with their new members and activity was running smoothly once more.
Mentors were also available to help direct the different groups. The mentors had training and success in areas such as marketing, business, and law. Mentors were both physically present, as well as virtually, with entrepreneurs available via Skype from San Diego, Copenhagen, Trondheim, Washington DC, and Fes.
Businesses were then pitched again before lunch on Saturday. The new pitches, based on the 12 original pitches, were more purposeful and defined. Group members had a clearer direction on what they wanted to achieve.
Groups were then left to continue with development, customer validation, and further mentoring throughout the afternoon.
Updates were given on the Saturday night, with business prototypes made, and even some customers already acquired. Head Coach and co-organiser Alan Froggatt said teams were ?on timeline? and ?settled?. This continued well into the night with one team operating until past 3am despite the venue being closed at 1am.
A hitch on Saturday night saw the lighting go out while groups were still operating. This didn?t seem to deter operations, though, as everybody seemed to be in high spirits.
Sunday morning provided the final countdown for the weekend.
Global Facilitator and co-organiser Dave Moskovitz said that everybody was ?under tremendous pressure and responding really, really well?. The teams? ideas were ?outstanding?, and with help from the mentors to ?crack the whip?, the teams worked hard and well to create viable business plans and products.
On the Sunday afternoon, teams finalised plans, products, and presentations in preparation for the judging panel that night. The panel consisted of four New Zealand business gurus: Candace Kinser, CEO of NZICT; Nick Gerritsen, Owner at Cripstart Ltd; Brett Roberts, CEO of Wharf42; and Misti Landtroop, Country General Manager at Pitney Bowes.
After all 12 teams presented their ideas for innovative businesses, the panel deliberated for a long time.
Coach and co-organiser Mike Zeff felt that due to the quality and potential of each presentation, it would be a ?tough call for the judges?.
In the end, the winning team was SmileToday.co, an innovative charity business with a social entrepreneurship aspect. First prize included a space on the ecentre sprint programme (valued at $4500), an MYOB start-up services package (valued at $1000), a StartupPack? of legal services from Lowdnes Jordan (valued at $2000), and a $500 cash prize on company formation.Following the Startup Weekend, 12 potential businesses were formed, with four receiving prizes to ensure their formation and continuation.

K9 Ventures II is a $40 million tech fund that will, once again, be dedicated to seed stage investments. The key difference this time around investments will be between?$250,000 - $750,000. LONDON (AP) ? Three British Muslims ? including a convert who was featured in a documentary about radical Islam and a former London police support officer ? have been charged with traveling to Pakistan for terror training, police said early Thursday.
Scotland Yard said in a statement that Richard Dart, 29, Imran Mahmood, 21, and Jahangir Alom, 26, had traveled to Pakistan between 2010 and 2012 "with the intention of committing acts of terrorism or assisting another to commit such acts."
The statement also alleges that the three provided others with advice and counseling about how to travel to Pakistan, find training, and how to stay safe while there.
Dart was featured in a recent BBC documentary, "My Brother the Islamist," which chronicled the efforts of his filmmaker stepbrother Robb Leech to understand why the former had rejected his family and embraced an uncompromising form of Islam.
Alom ? who was arrested in an armed raid at his home only a mile (1.6 kilometers) from London's Olympic Stadium ? was identified by Scotland Yard as a former police support officer. Police said, however, that the case is not Olympics-related.
Both men have appeared in YouTube videos in which they expound on their hardline beliefs.
Police did not immediately release much information on Mahmood. His address was given as down the street from London's Royal Air Force base Northolt, where Typhoon jets and other military elements are due to provide security for the 2012 Games, which begin July 27.
