Pedroia's hit leads Red Sox past A's, 4-2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? There was a time earlier this season when the Boston Red Sox struggled to drive in runs with two outs.

Suddenly, that seems like a long time ago.

Dustin Pedroia hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning, and the Red Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Friday night in a matchup between the AL's top teams.

Brock Holt also drove in two runs ? and also with two outs ? in the second inning before the A's rallied. Eleven of Boston's last 13 runs have come with two outs.

"There's no secret," said Pedroia, who also made a run-saving stop at second base to start a double play in the sixth. "We've just been able to find ways to get that one pitch and make sure we don't miss it."

John Lackey (7-6) overcame a season-high four walks in seven innings to carry the AL-leading Red Sox to their fourth straight victory. He allowed two runs and three hits while striking out five. He also hit a batter.

Lackey improved to 19-6 against the A's, even though this was far from his best performance.

"This is probably one that says more about where I'm at than anything," he said. "I probably didn't have my best stuff like I had my last few times out and still was able to do pretty good against a pretty good team."

The A's left six on base, while the Red Sox stranded five.

John Jaso hit an RBI single in the fifth and Jed Lowrie added a tying home run in the sixth for Oakland, which remained a game ahead of Texas in the AL West. Sean Doolittle (3-3) allowed one hit and hit a batter before Ryan Cook gave up Pedroia's two-out single.

Andrew Bailey, a two-time All-Star closer for the A's from 2009-2011, tossed a scoreless eighth. Koji Uehara pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save this season.

Jarrod Parker regrouped after a sloppy second inning to retire his final 16 batters and put the A's in position to come back. He gave up two runs and three hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking none.

"I was moving the ball in and out and being able to get some early contact. That helped me go later into the game after a long inning like that," Parker said.

The only runs off Parker came in an inning that featured two errors and a hit batter that also took out plate umpire CB Bucknor and caused a brief delay.

Third baseman Josh Donaldson's errant throw to first allowed Mike Napoli to advance to second. Then Parker's pitch ? clocked at 92 mph ? grazed Daniel Nava and hit the right side of Bucknor's mask.

Bucknor went down on one knee and winced in pain. Second base umpire and crew chief Bill Miller replaced Bucknor behind the plate and the game resumed with three umpires.

Holt's two-out single gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. He advanced to third on the play when catcher Jaso threw the ball into right-center field trying to nab him at second, but Parker never allowed another baserunner.

The A's offense finally got going when Seth Smith doubled off the wall in left leading off the fifth for the first hit against Lackey. After Coco Crisp walked, Jaso's single sliced Boston's lead to 2-1.

Crisp advanced to third when right fielder Shane Victorino bobbled Jaso's hit. But Pedroia made a spectacular diving stop at second on Donaldson's grounder to start an inning-ending double play.

"Thank God it landed in my glove, because if it didn't, it probably would have put a hole in my chest," Pedroia said of the hard-hit hopper.

Lowrie sent a 1-0 cutter from Lackey over the wall in right for the tying shot in the sixth. It was Lowrie's seventh home run this season.

Victorino was hit on the base of his right thumb by Doolittle to put runners on first and third in the seventh. After Victorino stole second uncontested, Pedroia singled to left against Cook to put Boston back in front.

"Just another very go overall win on our part," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

NOTES: The Red Sox acquired reliever Matt Thornton and cash from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league outfielder Brandon Jacob. ... Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz (neck strain) threw about 30 pitches in a bullpen session Friday. The rehab assignment he had been scheduled to make Sunday will now just be another bullpen session. Farrell said Bucholz will throw a simulated game at some point and make just one rehab start instead of the two originally planned. ... Brandon Workman, who allowed three earned runs in two innings in his major league debut in Wednesday's 11-4 win at Seattle, will make his first start in Sunday's series finale at Oakland, Farrell said. ... INF Adam Rosales, who the A's designated for assignment Monday, cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Sacramento. ... Lefty John Lester (8-5, 4.60 ERA) starts for the Red Sox against Oakland's A.J. Griffin (7-6, 3.94 ERA) on Saturday.

Jenny McCarthy, Donnie Wahlberg Dating: New Couple Reportedly Spent July 4th Together

Looks like Jenny McCarthy has found herself a new man, and he's none other than Mark Wahlberg's brother Donnie, of New Kids on the Block.

Us Weekly exclusively reports that the couple are officially an item. "Yes, they recently started dating and are having a lot of fun," a source told the magazine, adding that the two spent 4th of July weekend together.

Wahlberg was a guest on McCarthy's VH1 show back in March and the two playfully sucked on lollipops and exchanged pillow talk (see video below).

The blonde bombshell famously dated actor comedian Jim Carrey for over five years, and has a son from a previous relationship. Wahlberg was married to Kim Fey for nine years and they have two children together.

A request for comment made to McCarthy and Wahlberg's reps was not immediately answered.

Boeing Dreamliner catches fire at Britain's Heathrow airport

By Rhys Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Ethiopian Airlines caught fire at Britain's Heathrow airport on Friday, forcing the closure of both runways, in a blow for the U.S. planemaker that sent its New York shares down over 6 percent.

Television footage showed the Dreamliner surrounded by foam used by firefighters. Heathrow briefly closed both its runways to deal with the fire which broke out while the plane was parked at a remote stand.

There were no passengers aboard the plane.

"A Boeing 787 Dreamliner suffered an on board internal fire," a Heathrow spokeswoman said. "The plane is now parked at a remote parking stand several hundred meters away from any passenger terminals."

It was not clear if the fire was related to the battery, which was the cause of the previous fires on Dreamliner.

Boeing said it was aware of the fire and that had people on the ground working to understand the causes of it.

The Dreamliner, which was delivered to Ethiopian Airlines in November last year, arrived at Heathrow from Addis Ababa in the early hours of Friday, according to the Flightradar monitoring web site. The plane was due to make the return journey later on Friday.

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner was grounded by regulators in January after batteries burned on two of the jets within two weeks.

The new high-tech jet came under intense scrutiny and Boeing redesigned the battery system to add more layers of protection against fire. It resumed flying in April, with Ethiopian Airlines being the first to put it back into passenger service.

The innovative 787 uses a powerful 1.5 megawatt electrical system to drive air conditioning and hydraulic functions that are run from compressed air on traditional aircraft designs. The electrical system experienced fire during its development that also prompted changes in its electrical panels.

Asked whether the incident could lead to the renewed grounding of Dreamliner jets, a spokesman for Britain's Civil Aviation Authority said decisions on the airworthiness of particular models of plane were made by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliners are powered by General Electric GEnx engines.

Mexico regional airport closed due to volcanic ash

July 12, 2013 - 23:04 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - An airport serving Mexico's fourth-largest city has suspended operations due to volcanic ash from the Popocatepetl volcano, the Associated Press reported.

The international airport in Puebla was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

The airport is east of Mexico City and about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) volcano.

Airport spokesman Herbert Lopez Palma said Friday, July 12 that the ash could pose a risk in takeoff and landing. Flights to several Mexican cities as well as to Dallas and Houston, Texas, use the airport.

Authorities said this week that a lava dome is growing inside the crater and could cause further eruptions.

Microsoft sues US Customs for refusing to support Google smartphone ban

Microsoft Store Front

Microsoft has accused US Customs officials of refusing to adhere to the ITC's (International Trade Commission) order to block import mobile phones manufactured by Motorola, owned by Google. The ITC issued the import ban back in May 2012 after it was concluded that Motorola hardware infringed a Microsoft patent for synchronising calendar events with other computers.

Redmond complains that US Customs and Border Protection have had secret meetings with the search giant, continuing to allow Motorola mobile phones to enter the country even though Google hasn't addressed the original patent filing. Microsoft's deputy general counsel David Howard said in a statement, "Customs has a clear responsibility to carry out ITC decisions, which are reached after a full trial and rigorous legal review. Here Customs repeatedly ignored its obligation and did so based on secret discussions."

Google states that US Customs appropriately rejected Microsoft's patent claims to block Americans effectively utilising calendar functionality on mobile phones. That said, Microsoft's patent expires in April 2018. An appeal in the case is scheduled to be heard on August 6th in Washington. The ITC's role is to protect US markets from unfair competition, including the infringement of patents, but we've seen in the past how this is essentially a battleground between mobile phone manufacturers and software vendors. Google and Microsoft, along with Apple have been battling one another repeatedly.

Robert Stoll of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP in Washington, notes that "They want to focus their efforts on terrorism, and the issues related to intellectual property is not their concern." It'll be interesting to see how this develops, if anything is to come out of the situation. We've previously looked at the Google and Microsoft lifestyle - a match made in heaven, but we're sure consumers are growing tired of reading about the same brands locking in arms. One thing's for certain: this isn't over.

London councillor Stephen Orser wants to strip talking-texting drivers of their cell phones

You use it, you lose it.

A London politician wants to give the city the power to seize your cell phone if you?re caught texting or yakking behind the wheel.

Coun. Stephen Orser will make his push at city hall a week from Monday ? and it it could be a first in Canada.

?Texting and driving is killing people and the rate is staggering,? he said Thursday.

Since 2010, under a tough new law, Ontario has slapped fines ? $155 if you agree to the charge, up to $500 if you fight it ? on drivers caught using hand-held cell phones or other electronic devices when their attention should be on the road.

A sign of the times, every province and territory in Canada except one now has fines against cell-phone use while driving.

The only exception is Nunavut, which has no paved roads and only 300 km of unpaved roads.

Accident statistics back the need for fines and enforcement. Talking on a cell phone while driving raises the risk of a collision four- or five- fold, while texting boosts the odds of a bad ending 23-fold.

?Distracted driving is a huge issue,? said Elliott Silverstein of the Canadian Automobile Association.

While it?s possible another city has made a similar move as Orser proposes, that would be news to Silverstein, who manages government relations for the CAA in South Central Ontario and speaks often with his CAA counterparts in other provinces.

?This is the first time this has been brought to our attention,? he said.

Orser?s effort is well timed, just 8 days before the CAA launches another national campaign against distracted driving, this one called Missing.

?We?ll definitely be looking at (what London does),? Silverstein said.

The issue is pressing in London, where police are on pace to issue the most fines ever. Here are the stats through July 10 of each year:

  • 2013: 840
  • 2012: 616
  • 2011: 744

?Distracted driving is one of the (big) killers on our roads? London Sgt. Ryan Scrivens said.

There are unanswered questions about Orser?s move, including whether the city has the power to authorize police to seize phones. Even then, what?s to stop a busted driver from just getting another cell phone? Answers weren?t immediately available from authorities Thursday.

Orser said he doesn?t know if the city has the authority to carry through what he?s suggesting, but is convinced something more needs to be done.

?Enough is enough,? he said.

That sentiment is also the reason one London couple have stuck a sign in their car they direct at drivers who text and drive: ?If this offends you, good. Stop texting and driving. It kills.?

Jennifer Lacroix delivers food for a living and says she?s seen too many drivers with their eyes focused on their phones.

?I?ve heard that if you text one sentence it?s like driving blind down eight football fields,? Lacroix said. ?We?re hoping that people read the sign and put down their phones.?
