Soldier who vanished in Vietnam still alive?

Photo of Sgt. Robertson (movieunclaimed.com)Sgt. John Harley Robertson (movieunclaimed.com)

"Unclaimed," a new documentary premiering at Toronto's Hot Docs film festival on Tuesday night, tells the story of Special Forces Green Beret Master Sgt. John Hartley Robertson, who was shot down over Laos in 1968 and long presumed dead.

The documentary actually follows fellow Vietnam vet Tom Faunce, who heard about Robertson's whereabouts while on a humanitarian mission and wants to find him. Faunce does track down someone claiming to be Sgt. Robertson in a remote village in south-central Vietnam. The man, according to the Toronto Star, was a "wiry 76-year-old" who "trembles with frustration or pounds his forehead when he is unable to remember his birthday or his American children?s names. He is only able to speak Vietnamese."

According to the documentary, directed by Edmonton filmmaker Michael Jorgensen, Sgt. Robertson was captured by North Vietnam forces, tortured and eventually escaped. Rather than return to his wife and children in the U.S., he stayed in Vietnam and married another woman, assuming the name of her deceased husband, Dang Tan Ngoc. An article from the Toronto Star explains that in the years since, he has apparently forgotten how to speak English.

The Globe and Mail writes that the man was "prone to weeping and fits of dementia. His memory was in tatters, unable to conjure even a seemingly simple fact like his birthday or the names of his two American children. And when he did remember, the recollections often were wrong or difficult to confirm. The U.S. military, moreover, refused any help or information."

Whether or not the man is indeed Sgt. Robertson remains unproven. But, as the Toronto Star puts it, the film "makes a compelling case" that it's him:

There is physical proof of Robertson?s birthplace, collected in dramatic fashion onscreen; a tearful meeting in Vietnam with a soldier who was trained by Robertson in 1960 and said he knew him on sight; and a heart-wrenching reunion with his only surviving sister?80-year-old Jean Robertson-Holly?in Edmonton in December 2012 that left the audience at the Toronto screening wiping away tears.

Robertson-Holly was offered a chance to take a DNA test to prove the relationship, but declined, saying she didn't need to to know the man is her brother, according to the Toronto Star. Jorgensen told the paper that Robertson?s American wife and two children initially offered to participate in DNA testing, but later withdrew the offer.

While speaking to the Globe and Mail about his film and what's next for the man believed to be Sgt. Robertson, Jorgensen said, "There?s maybe a bit of a misconception; everybody assumes: ?Well, obviously, he wants to come back to North America. But at this point he?s happier being back there, taking care of his wife, to whom he feels an incredible amount of loyalty, and their kids."

Below, the trailer for "Unclaimed."

I Am Stereoblind, But the 3DS Lets Me See the World as Others See It

I cried the first time I held a Nintendo 3DS. The experience was a revelation that I'll not soon forget, and even if everyone stopped making games for it tomorrow, my blue 3DS XL is not going anywhere. That little machine is a window into a part of human experience that most people take for granted, but which is otherwise inaccessible to me.

124 Millimeters of Depth

I am mostly stereoblind. Stereoblindness is a blanket term for any condition that prevents a person from perceiving depth using binocular vision.

Depending on whom you ask, it affects somewhere between 3 and 15 percent of the world's population, which creates an interesting demographic hurdle for the 3D television industry. Some people are stereoblind because their vision in one eye is severely impaired, others because their brains are unable to coalesce images from both eyes into a three-dimensional result.

I'm very slightly cross-eyed. Not enough for anyone else to notice, but enough that my lines of sight intersect about 10-12 inches in front of my face and continue in divergent directions.

Basically, I have double vision all the time.

Childhood eye therapy and surgery (not LASIK?I had sutures on my left eyeball) helped a bit, but most of the time I just use one eye and ignore the other. Being stereoblind isn't that much of a handicap; I can't see Magic Eye images, and 3D movies are just 2D movies with lousy contrast, but that's about it.

I say I'm "mostly" stereoblind because despite my eyes' poor grasp of trigonometry, the optical center of my brain seems to work just fine. I discovered this the first time I held a 3DS and played Pilotwings Resort. To be perfectly honest, I really didn't expect much from the console. But clever readers have already noticed that my sight lines meet at just the right distance for holding a 3DS.

After playing with the depth slider off for a few minutes, I slid it up out of sheer curiosity and saw something I had never seen in my life: a third dimension.

This is how other people see the world all the time.

Not only was I "seeing into the screen" the way so many others feel when playing a 3DS for the first time, I was seeing in a direction that had previously been literally invisible to me.

It's difficult to come up with a metaphor. Maybe it's what Gomez saw the first time he spun the world in Fez. Maybe you can remember the first time you lay on the grass at night, looked up at the stars, and realized you weren't looking up at all, because there is no "up", and you were suddenly aware of being attached to the surface of a tiny sphere rolling through a vast emptiness. Or perhaps you once looked at an Escher woodcut long enough for the positive and negative space to switch places. I suppose any analogy would be imperfect; I was seeing a new piece of everyday reality.

As silly as it may seem to get an existential epiphany out of a $200 plastic gadget, the apparent solidity of the tiny simulacra on that screen made them seem almost more "real" than the world around me, which looked suddenly flat by comparison. It didn't matter that they had three-digit polygon counts and textures that must have topped out at 512x512. I had never before perceived things as having volume, only a sort of surface area in terms of how much of my vision they took up. It was intoxicating. It was a glimpse into something that I immediately realized was part of everyone else's normal experience. This is how other people see the world all the time. There's nothing magical about the perception of depth.

I had never known it was possible for reality to look this way?for things to look as solid as they feel.

Yet there I was, holding this little chunk of plastic and silicon in my hands, tears streaming down my face because I had never known it was possible for reality to look this way?for things to look as solid as they feel. I couldn't look away. I got a 3DS of my own the next day, and later replaced it with an XL. I revisited Hyrule in Ocarina of Time 3D, stopping and staring at every piece of architecture. I still spend more time running aimlessly through Super Mario 3D Land's gorgeous environments than I do trying to beat the game.

Wouldn't anyone, if it were the only place where things had volume?

Sometimes I despair. Sometimes it's hard to face the possibility of never being able to perceive mountains or forests or ancient ruins or modern cities or my parents or my fianc?e with such depth as I can see Link opening a treasure chest inside an illuminated 4.88-inch rectangle. But ultimately, I'm incredibly lucky to have only this minor affliction to contend with. And in any case, it may even be possible to treat stereoblindness.

Until then, I'm keeping my 3DS.

Kuwait court keeps jail time for Twitter insult

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? A Kuwait appeals court says an online activist must serve a jail sentence for Twitter posts deemed offensive to the Gulf nation's ruler, but the prison term was reduced from two years to one.

Monday's decision sends a message that Kuwaiti authorities are holding firm to their crackdown on social media despite having put on hold proposals for tougher media codes, which could have imposed fines of nearly $1 million for insulting the Western-backed emir.

Since last year, officials have stepped up arrests for perceived dissent on blogs and Twitter.

Kuwaiti media says the appeals court cut in half the two-year sentence given in March to Sager al-Hashash for Twitter posts.

Kuwait has the Gulf's most free-wheeling political system and a vibrant press, but denouncing the emir is illegal.

Are lesbians more accepted than gay men? | The Salt Lake Tribune

ADVANCE FOR USE SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2013 AND THEREAFTER - Sarah Toce, editor of a daily online news magazine "The Seattle Lesbian," poses for a photo Friday, April 19, 2013, in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, in an alleyway that has been the site of fights and other violence against gay men. Even as society has become more accepting of homosexuality overall, longstanding research has shown more societal tolerance for lesbians than gay men, and that gay men are significantly more likely to be targets of violence. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

Society ? Research shows more societal tolerance for lesbians, and gay men face more violence.

Chicago ? It may be a man?s world, as the saying goes, but lesbians seem to have an easier time living in it than gay men do.

High-profile lesbian athletes have come out while still playing their sports, but not a single gay male athlete in major U.S. professional sports has done the same. While television?s most prominent same-sex parents are the two fictional dads on "Modern Family," surveys show that society is actually more comfortable with the idea of lesbians parenting children.

And then there is the ongoing debate over the Boy Scouts of America proposal to ease their ban on gay leaders and scouts.

Reaction to the proposal, which the BSA?s National Council will take up next month, has been swift, and often harsh. Yet amid the discussions, the Girl Scouts of USA reiterated their policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, among other things. That announcement has gone largely unnoticed.

Certainly, the difference in the public?s reaction to the scouting organizations can be attributed, in part, to their varied histories, including the Boy Scouts? longstanding religious ties and a base that has become less urban over the years, compared with the Girl Scouts?.

But there?s also an undercurrent here, one that?s often present in debates related to homosexuality, whether over the military?s now-defunct "Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell" policy or even same-sex marriage. Even as society has become more accepting of homosexuality overall, longstanding research has shown more societal tolerance for lesbians than gay men, and that gay men are significantly more likely to be targets of violence.

That research also has found that it?s often straight men who have the most difficult time with homosexuality ? and particularly gay men ? says researcher Gregory Herek.

"Men are raised to think they have to prove their masculinity, and one big part about being masculine is being heterosexual. So we see that harassment, jokes, negative statements and violence are often ways that even younger men try to prove their heterosexuality," says Herek, a psychologist at the University of California, Davis, who has, for years, studied this phenomenon and how it plays out in the gay community.

That is not, of course, to downplay the harassment lesbians face. It can be just as ugly.

But it?s not as frequent, Herek and others have found, especially in adulthood. It?s also not uncommon for lesbians to encounter straight men who have a fascination with them.

story continues below

"The men hit on me. The women hit on me. But I never feel like I?m in any immediate danger," says Sarah Toce, the 29-year-old editor of The Seattle Lesbian and managing editor of The Contributor, both online news magazines. "If I were a gay man, I might ? and if it?s like this in Seattle, can you imagine what it is like in less-accepting parts of middle America?"

One of Herek?s studies found that, overall, 38 percent of gay men said that, in adulthood, they?d been victims of vandalism, theft or violence ? hit, beaten or sexually assaulted ? because they were perceived as gay. About 13 percent of lesbians said the same.

A separate study of young people in England also found that, in their teens, gay boys and lesbians were almost twice as likely to be bullied as their straight peers. By young adulthood, it was about the same for lesbians and straight girls. But in this study, published recently in the journal Pediatrics, gay young men were almost four times more likely than their straight peers to be bullied.

At least one historian says it wasn?t always that way for either men or women, whose "expressions of love" with friends of the same gender were seen as a norm ? even idealized ? in the 19th century.

"These relationships offered ample opportunity for those who would have wanted to act on it physically, even if most did not," says Thomas Foster, associate professor and head of the history department at DePaul University in Chicago.

Today?s "code of male gendered behavior," he says, often rejects these kinds of expressions between men.

We joke about the "bro-mance" ? a term used to describe close friendships between straight men. But in some sense, the humor stems from the insinuation that those relationships could be romantic, though everyone assumes they aren?t.

Call those friends "gay," a word that?s still commonly used as an insult, and that?s quite another thing. Consider the furor over Rutgers University men?s basketball coach Mike Rice, who was recently fired for mistreating his players and mocking them with gay slurs.

If two women dance together at a club or walk arm-in-arm down the street, people are usually less likely to question it ? though some wonder if that has more to do with a lack of awareness than acceptance.

"Lesbians are so invisible in our society. And so I think the hatred is more invisible," says Laura Grimes, a licensed clinical social worker in Chicago whose counseling practice caters to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients.

Officials: Cyberattack suspect had bunker in Spain

MADRID (AP) ? A Dutch citizen arrested in northeast Spain on suspicion of launching what is described as the biggest cyberattack in Internet history operated from a bunker and had a van capable of hacking into networks anywhere in the country, officials said Sunday.

The suspect traveled in Spain using his van "as a mobile computing office, equipped with various antennas to scan frequencies," an Interior Ministry statement said.

Agents arrested him Thursday in the city of Granollers, 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Barcelona, complying with a European arrest warrant issued by Dutch authorities.

He is accused of attacking the Swiss-British anti-spam watchdog group Spamhaus whose main task is to halt ads for counterfeit Viagra and bogus weight-loss pills reaching the world's inboxes.

The statement said officers uncovered the computer hacker's bunker, "from where he even did interviews with different international media."

The 35-year-old, whose birthplace was given as the western Dutch city of Alkmaar, was identified only by his initials: S.K.

The statement said the suspect called himself a diplomat belonging to the "Telecommunications and Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Republic of Cyberbunker."

Spanish police were alerted in March by Dutch authorities of large denial-of-service attacks being launched from Spain that were affecting Internet servers in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the U.S. These attacks culminated with a major onslaught on Spamhaus.

The Netherlands National Prosecution Office described them as "unprecedentedly serious attacks on the nonprofit organization Spamhaus."

The largest assault clocked in at 300 billion bits per second, according to San Francisco-based CloudFlare Inc., which Spamhaus enlisted to help it weather the onslaught.

Denial-of-service attacks overwhelm a server with traffic, jamming it with incoming messages. Security experts measure the attacks in bits of data per second. Recent cyberattacks ? such as the ones that caused persistent outages at U.S. banking sites late last year ? have tended to peak at 100 billion bits per second, one third the size of that experienced by Spamhaus.

Netherlands, German, British and U.S. police forces took part in the investigation leading to the arrest, Spain said.

The suspect is expected to be extradited from Spain to face justice in the Netherlands.

BYD Launches Green-Hybrid Technologies Across Entire Car Line ...

SHANGHAI?(BUSINESS WIRE)?This week, BYD
unveiled several exciting technologies to improve fuel efficiencies by
greater than 20% in all their 2014 vehicle line-up. They are calling it
the ?Green Hybrid? initiative with ?Insta-Pure? cabin
filtering systems and were well aligned with this year?s Auto Show theme
? ?innovation, better life?. There are several breakthroughs tied to the
?Green Hybrid? initiative; first BYD becomes the first vehicle OEM to
implement the higher-efficiency 48VDC vehicle voltage platforms using
BYD?s internally developed Iron-Phosphate batteries (versus older
heavy-metal-laden, 12VDC Lead-Acid technologies). This new technology
allows the battery life to be extended to the expected life of the car ?
no more worrisome starter-battery replacements. Vehicles transition to
all-LED lighting, Electronic Parking Systems, Hybrid and regenerative
braking, idle start-stop energy management, automatic engine starts, low
rolling resistance and advanced aero-dynamic designs. 48VDC systems are
not hindered by the line/harness power losses experienced with normal
lower-voltage systems (saving important energy for batteries). BYD then
implemented low-voltage, large-torque, double-winding motor technologies
for battery-acceleration-assist and regenerative braking. These changes
have been shown to save as much as 1.5 litres of fuel/ 100km (on a 30
mpg car, that?s as much as a 7 mpg
improvement!).

BYD?s ?Insta-Pure? cabin filtering technology help protect drivers and
passengers from dangerous city PM2.5 issues (Particulate Matter up to
2.5 micrometers in size), by quickly rotating cabin air, scrubbing and
filtering it, all in less than 3-5 minutes. The first production
vehicles launching with this advanced cabin purification system are the
new BYD S6 Premier models ?debuting at this year?s show. This level-4
purification technology is integrated into the vehicle?s air
conditioning system and detects the inside and outside particulate
matter levels, triggering auto-air-filtering equipment, sterilizing,
deodorizing and purifying all PM2.5 levels to below 12. This technology
not only gives consumer families a cleaner driving sphere, but also
provides a feasible scheme for improving all urban environments.

While the ?Suri? (featuring the break-through ?Remote Driving
Controller? technology) was announced at the 2012 Beijing International
Auto Show, it was also on display again in Shanghai and has been selling
an average of 10,000 units per month in the China market, exceeding
BYD?s expectations. The second model debuting last year in the 2012 auto
show was the advanced BYD Dual Mode ?Qin? (pronounced ?Chin?).
Two models of Qin were on display at the Auto show though Qin officially
launches in mass-production later this year in China. Qin is the
next-generation dual-mode
electric vehicle
?flagship? using BYD?s innovative Dual Mode
II
system. The Qin can travel 50 km (31 miles) on a single 10 KWh
charge and in hybrid mode output 223 KW of power and a whopping 440 Nm
of torque ? accelerating from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 5.9
seconds
(this was previously advertised as 6.9 sec, but BYD has
improved it over the last year). Qin also has a top speed of 185 km/h
(115mph). In hybrid mode, the Qin requires just 16 RMB (~$ 2.50 USD) of
energy per 100 Km (equating to a little less than 2 liters of fuel per
100 km or 118 mpg). For more information, visit BYD at www.facebook.com/bydcompany
and www.byd.com.

About BYD
BYD is ranked #1 at
the top of Bloomberg?s and BusinessWeek?s 2009 Tech 100 List (http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20100520006751/en/BYD-Tops-Bloomberg-Businessweek%E2%80%99s-12th-Annual-Tech

battery
technologies like the BYD?s Iron
Phosphate
battery used in BYD electric
vehicles
and electric
busses
