5 Simple Health Tests You Can Perform at Home - Build Muscle and ...

Home Health Tests

Home Health Girl

Not every cough and sniffle calls for a visit to the doctor?s office, nor does every scrape and burn necessitate an expensive trip to the emergency room. In most cases you can tell if a home remedy will do the trick or if professional medical care is advisable, but you will certainly have occasions where you?re just not sure if the symptoms will pass or if you need professional help.

Many people would probably appreciate having ways to determine their relative state of health between annual physicals or check-ups in order to see if they need additional care or alternately, if their efforts to improve health and fitness are paying off. So here are just a few simple health tests that you can perform on your own at home to check yourself out.

  1. Temperature

Fevers are indicative of an infection, or rather, they are the result of your body fighting an infection. In most cases there is no cause for concern. Although a fever will make you feel pretty awful, the majority are low-grade and break within a matter of hours or just a couple of days.

However, there may be extreme scenarios in which you require hospitalization with a fever, such as an unusually high temperature (103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater), an extended fever (lasting longer than a week), or accompanying symptoms like excessive vomiting (leading to dangerous dehydration), chest or abdominal pain, confusion or hallucinations, or any other symptoms that seem serious. Taking your temperature with an inexpensive home thermometer can give you a quick gauge of the severity of a fever.

  2. Pulse

Studies show that your resting heart rate can offer you an early warning of your risk for heart attack. The average adult heart should beat about 60 times per minute. This rate indicates optimum health and extremely low risk for heart attack. But once your pulse gets over about 75 beats per minute your risk for heart attack rises significantly.

Luckily, testing your resting heart rate is easy. All you have to do is sit and relax for a few minutes and then take your pulse (at your wrist or throat). If the number is high, it may be time to talk to your doctor.

  3. Blood pressure

High or low blood pressure can be to blame for a number of symptoms that range from annoying to potentially deadly. Those on the low end of the spectrum may experience fatigue, dizziness, and fainting, while high blood pressure can be to blame for headaches and even strokes. But if you purchase a blood pressure cuff and learn how to read it (you can find them on Amazon for about ten bucks and there are tons of tutorials online that will show you how to use one), you can track your own blood pressure to determine if it might be playing a role in your symptoms.

  4. BMI

Your body mass index is not exactly easy to calculate, but it?s certainly not rocket science. To start, measure your weight (in pounds) and height (in inches). Now divide you weight by your height squared. So if you are 60 inches tall (five feet) and you weigh a hundred pounds, for example, your equation would be 100/60?60, or 100/3600, resulting in an answer of 0.028. You will then multiply this number by 703 (called the conversion factor), which will result in your body mass index (in this case about 19.7).

So what does this number mean? In general, you want the number to fall in the 18.5 to 25 range as this is considered to be the healthiest weight for your height. If your calculation comes out below 18.5 or above 25, you could be at an unhealthy weight (although you may want to talk to your doctor for further information).

(Note from the editor: this post is essentially a guest post. Project Swole does not support BMI in the slightest. BMI is a joke and does not reflect a measure of healthiness in anyone who has more muscle mass than the average person. Instead, you want to use body fat percentage to determine how much fat you are holding on your body with respect to non-fat tissue. This can be calculated using either calipers or an electronic hand-held tool.

  5. Pregnancy

Granted, this type of home health test only applies to about half of the population, but as test kits at home go, this one is pretty popular. Although you will probably want to go to the doctor eventually if your test is positive, a negative result could save you an unnecessary trip.

India rape victim in Singapore, PM pledges action

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young victim of a gang rape on a New Delhi bus was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The Dec. 16 rape and brutal beating of the 23-year-old student triggered widespread protests in New Delhi and other parts of India demanding a government crackdown on the daily harassment Indian women face, ranging from groping to severe violence. Some protesters have called for the death penalty or castration for rapists, who under current laws face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Rape victims rarely press charges because of social stigma and fear they will be accused of inviting the attack. Many women say they structure their lives around protecting themselves and their daughters from attack.

Singh's government set up two committees in response to the protests. One, looking into speeding up sexual assault trials, has already received 6,100 email suggestions. The second will examine what lapses might have contributed to the rape ? which took place on a moving bus that passed through police checkpoints ? and suggest measures to improve women's safety.

"Let me state categorically that the issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government," Singh told a development meeting. He urged officials in India's states to pay special attention to the problem.

"There can be no meaningful development without the active participation of half the population, and this participation simply cannot take place if their security and safety is not assured," he said.

The victim of the gang rape arrived in Singapore on an air ambulance Thursday and was admitted in "extremely critical condition," to the intensive care unit" of the Mount Elizabeth hospital, renowned for multi-organ transplant facilities, the hospital said in a statement.

India's Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in a statement that the government, which is overseeing her treatment and paying the costs, had decided to send her abroad on the recommendation of her doctors here.

"Despite the best efforts of our doctors, the victim continues to be critical and her fluctuating health remains a big cause of concern to all of us," he said.

Her family was also being sent to Singapore to be with her during her treatment, which could last weeks, he said.

Meanwhile, police in riot gear manning barricades filled the streets of central Delhi in a show of force ahead of another planned protest march. Near daily protests have shut down the center of the capital for days since the rape. Police quelled some of the demonstrations with tear gas, water cannons and baton charges.

One police officer died Tuesday after collapsing during a weekend protest. Police said an autopsy showed the officer had a heart attack that could have been caused by injuries suffered during violence at the protest. An Associated Press journalist at the scene said the officer was running toward the protesters with a group of police when he collapsed on the ground and began frothing at the mouth and shaking. Two protesters rushed to the officer to try to help him. Police charged eight people with murder in the death of the policeman.

Police said the rape victim was traveling on the evening of Dec. 16 with a male friend on a bus when they were attacked by six men who gang raped her and beat the couple with iron rods before stripping them and dumping them on a road. All six suspects in the case have been arrested, police said.

B.D. Athani, the medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, where the woman had been treated, said she suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries, underwent three surgeries and had parts of her intestines removed, according to the Press Trust of India.

"With fortitude and courage, the girl survived the aftereffects of the injuries so far well. But the condition continues to be critical," he was quoted as saying.

Video-streaming Xmas cheer restored for Netflix users as AWS outage gets fixed for affected devices

Christmas cheer restored at Netflix,

Did this Christmas' Netflix outage have you and yours "bah humbuging" whilst picking through that collection of physical discs for solace? Fret no more, as the apparent Amazon Web Services outage behind the problem (which brought the service down on many-a-device) is now a officially a mark in Christmas Past. Within the last hour, Netflix announced via its Twitter accounts that its Instant Watch offerings are now "back to normal streaming levels." Help me with life

I am a senior in high school this year. I will be going off to college next year, and up until I started riding motorcycles last year it has always been computer engineering that I wanted to go into. It's still a VERY viable option, but I'm increasingly becoming interested in trying to find some sort of engineering that could correlate in some way to motorcycles/auto. The best moments in life happened on my motorcycle in the last year, and if a job is viable I feel that could be the best way to go for me to be happy working for the rest of my life.

I'm not quite sure what jobs, besides mechanic, are really viable with motorcycles.

So, my question: What careers have you guys heard of, experienced, known, etc. etc. that relate to motorcycles in the engineering field? Or dealing with motorcycles? The closest things you know of?

Motorcycles are generally a hobby, not a career option (unless you are Dani Pedrosa) and unless you are a high level engineer or specialized mechanic the money is probably not going to be that great. Go for a high level engineering degree in a field that interests you to get a good paying career started, then buy all kinds of motorcycles and tinker around or do track days in your spare time. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks!

Trust me, I understand that motorcycles are mostly a hobby. But in my mind, there's also the people that make that hobby happen.

I'm quite aware that it's a long-shot, but I'm just trying to find if there's any even distant-related auto-related jobs that are plausible to try to get into. Computer engineering is still my #1 choice, I've stuck with programming since I was 9, but you can never have too many options!

I had a friend that went to MMI and become a well trained mechanic. After a few years him and a buddy left the dealerships they were at and opened their own shop. They were doing really well with steady business. But eventually he got burnt out and decided to enlist in the army. They closed up shop and I asked him why and he said the money was good but turning your hobby into your career kind of takes the fun out of it.

I understand that your planning on a higher level than he was at but it may still fit. I'd think your best bet would be try to get ahold of some manufactures of bikes and components. In Ohio your going to be limited to Honda (they don't build bikes here but sometimes test them near Marysville), Showa, or Harley if you travel. I can't think of anyone else off hand. Maybe look into R+D there's a place beside the Honda plant called TRC that does all sorts of testing but most of the engineers there work for Honda. You could get into tires those are always changing but the closest would be Goodyear and they aren't really known for motorcycle tires. You could contact Don Guhl of Guhl motorsports, he is the go to guy for getting the computer on your bike reflashed. They do a lot of performance stuff there and are a small enough shop that you can probably get in and talk to them about your career choice and how to go about it. They are in Pennsylvania somewhere.

About a month ago someone started a thread about this same exact topic you may want to dig that up so people don't have to repeat what they said in there.

Ill tell you what I always told my brother, what your career comes down to is this, you are selling your time. Get a good education so you can sell it to the highest bidder. No matter what interest you pursue in life it wil eventually become just a job that you do for money.

Of course, my brother didn't listen to me, went to school for police science and works for a box store.

Yup mechanical. I had my heart set on designing cars boats and roller coasters up until my freshmen year of college when I was way too bored and lazy in Engineering and realized how remotely small of a shot it was to do what I really wanted

My primary interest in high school was automobiles. I was in college prep but the guys in the auto mechanics tech program would bring their cars to me to tune (this was in the early seventies when emissions controls were new & absolutely ruined the performance of cars.) Everyone was always saying, "Why don't you become a mechanical engineer since you love cars so much?" My reason was I didn't want to ruin my passion by making it my job. I knew that VERY FEW jobs are really something enjoyable, but are a means to an end. I decided I wanted to do something that would allow me to make enough money to enjoy my hobby (cars, then later motorcycles) and still be a job that I at least wouldn't hate to do the rest of my life. You will find out that there is NO job that ends up being what you think it is and no matter what, you'll have good and bad days. So, what did I decide to become? An optometrist! In no way related to cars/bikes but a career wih good hours, good working conditions and good pay. I've been successfully self employed for 30 years, raised a family, and played with a number of cool bikes & cars over the past 30+ years.

Stratum ventilation systems have been touted as a much more energy efficient system for cooling buildings such as school rooms and offices in hotter climes based on the provisions of the recent ANSI/ASHRAE 55-2010. They may also reduce the risk of the spread of airborne diseases according to a study to be published early next year in the journal World Review of Science, Technology and Sustainable Development.

This approach to cooling small and medium-sized rooms in a building has come to the fore as a low-cost alternative to high-energy air-conditioning systems particularly in East Asia and is being recommended for school buildings and other establishments by several governments. In this system a horizontal airflow is produced. However, Lin and colleagues hoped to address the potential problem with any air distribution system in understanding how it might disperse airborne viruses, such as flu viruses, present on expectorated sputum droplets.

Zhang Lin, Jinliang Wang, Ting Yao, T.T. Chow and K.F. Fong of the City University of Hong Kong have created a computer model to help them predict the movements of exhaled droplets in a room with different types of air distribution systems: mixing ventilation, displacement ventilation and stratum ventilation. The simulation is based on the so-called drift-flux model developed from an Eulerian-Eulerian approach is adopted to simulate the particle movement in a room.

"The results show that the flow patterns created by different ventilation methods have great influence on the particle fates," the team explains. The particle concentrations for the breathing zone under stratum ventilation are significantly lower than that under mixing ventilation or with displacement ventilation. "This implies that the risk of pathogen inhalation under stratum ventilation is also lower," the team adds. The team's model demonstrates that of the various ventilation systems the occupants of stratum ventilated room would have the lowest risk of infection.

Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research

  • Many researchers and clinicians believe that an early age at first drink (AFD) can lead to alcohol problems.
  • A new study challenges that belief by examining linkages between AFD and problem behaviors.
  • Findings show that early drunkenness was a greater risk factor for 15-year-olds than an early AFD.

Many studies have reported that the earlier the age at first drink (AFD) the higher the chances of that person developing later drinking-related problems. However, it is unclear why consuming small quantities at an early age should lead to later problems. A new study of linkages between AFD and problem behaviors smoking, marijuana use, injuries, fights, and low academic performance among 15-year-olds has found that early drunkenness was a risk factor rather than an early AFD.

Results will be published in the March 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.

"The problem is that people tend to think of early drinking onset in terms of toxicity exposure," explained Emmanuel Kuntsche, a senior scientist at Addiction Switzerland as well as corresponding author for the study. "That is, the longer any creature is exposed to a toxic circumstance, the worse. Or, the earlier the toxic circumstance was in place, the worse today's outcome. However, this thinking neglects two principal issues when it comes to alcohol use: one, consumption of small amounts of alcohol such as a sip are not toxic, and two, the majority of the population is not constantly exposed to toxic amounts of alcohol. Adolescent drinking patterns in particular are characterized by large variations from day to day with longer periods of abstinence."

"This is a remarkable study, shedding light on an area too often considered obvious," added Allaman Allamani, former co-ordinator of the Florence Health Agency Alcohol Centre, and presently with the Tuscany Regional Health Agency. "The great majority of studies, in fact, simply imply a causal relationship between early AFD and later drinking problems. This was probably due to the fact that in some drinking cultures, where most of these studies were conducted, and for many adolescents there, the first drink may be a drunkenness experience."

"First, we argue that an early AFD can be a marker of other problems such as conduct disorder, being a child of alcoholic parents, or having experienced childhood trauma," said Kuntsche. "But an early AFD does not have to be a marker of problems. For example, I drank the foam from my father's beer in a pub when he was not watching. I was five years old and became quite inebriated. Still, I think I've done quite well in life. Second, we argue that early drunkenness is the main risk factor, not an early AFD."

Kuntsche and his colleagues analyzed data gathered through the 2005/2006 edition of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) cross-national survey, which has been conducted every four years since 1983 among 11-, 13-, and 15-year-olds in collaboration with the World Health Organization. For this study, the sample for analysis was comprised of 44,801 alcohol-experienced 15-year olds (23,322 girls, 21,479 boys) from 38 North American and European countries and regions.

"We found that early drunkenness was a risk factor for various adolescent problem behaviors at 15 years of age rather than an early AFD," said Kuntsche. "We believe that future research should focus on the problems behind early drunkenness rather than on the AFD per se. Prevention efforts need to focus on impeding early drunkenness in order to prevent subsequent harm during adolescence and beyond."

"It is also important to consider that early drunkenness is not the only risk factor for later problems," said Allamani. "Indeed, even if it is usually true that you cannot be drunk if you are not drinking, the study shows that early drinking is not sufficient for an adolescent to get drunk. Therefore other factors should be considered to explain this comportment at the moment that drunkenness appears. The authors suggest negative life events, behavioural problems, and parents' alcoholism as possible underlying problems."

"I think these findings have important implications for parents," said Kuntsche. "People/parents should not panic when they become aware that a child/young adolescent has taken one sip or glass of any alcoholic beverage. They should simply explain to the underage person that this is an inappropriate behavior because, for example, alcohol consumption is problematic for the developing brain. In addition, parents should set clear restrictive rules to impede underage drinking, as well as sanctions for transgression of the rules. At the same time they should foster closeness with their kids, for example, by instigating joint family activities."

Allamani agreed. "The study findings imply the relevance of the family context, where the first moderate drink may be experienced," he said. Drinking is not an individual behavior, but an interactional one. Through their own behavior, family adult members transmit both values and behaviors to their children. They may be oriented towards moderation, but also to risk or to abuse. As adults, we should be aware of our decisive role in front of our kids."

Apple debuts new, more detailed status page for iCloud and other services

As those affected by recent iMessage outages no doubt noticed, Apple's status page for its various services hasn't exactly been the most detailed around. That's changed a bit today, however, with the company rolling out a new page that promise to offer a better look at what's working and what's not across iCloud, iTunes and Apple's other services. As you can see above, that includes a grid that provides a quick look at any outages currently occurring, below which is a more detailed timeline that lets you look back at any past outages and how long they lasted.

Verizon pushing Android 4.1 update to Samsung Galaxy S III tomorrow

Verizon pushing Jelly Bean update to Samsung Galaxy S III tomorrow

Verizon seems to be late to the update party, but Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be pushed out to its version of the Samsung Galaxy S III "in phases" as an OTA update beginning December 14th. We knew it was coming in the very near future, but it's nice to have a specific date to look forward to. Don't be alarmed if the update doesn't show up right away; as we've seen with plenty of other OTA rollouts, it may take a while for it to reach every GS3 user on the network. Along with Jelly Bean, you can also expect to see support for global data roaming, mobile payments through Isis, some extra preloaded applications and miscellaneous enhancements across the board. Here's the interesting tidbit: Verizon's support page claims that the new upgrade is only 62MB in total size. This seems to be quite hard to believe, given the fact that Jelly Bean on other Galaxy S III variants has ranged in size from 275MB (Sprint) to 740MB (AT&T), but perhaps Big Red cooked up a little extra magic to make the long wait even more worthwhile.
