New life, new look: Katie Holmes, is that you?

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Those of us outside of Russia may never buy a Russian copy of Harper's Bazaar, but thanks to the magic of the Internet, we can still see how Katie Holmes looks on the cover of the October 2012 issue. And she looks ... sleekly glamorous and almost unrecognizable.

Gilles Bensimon / Harper's Bazaar

Katie Holmes on the cover of Harper's Bazaar in Russia.

"America's Top Model" fans should take note -- Holmes was photographed for the Russian edition by fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon, who's been a guest photographer on that show.

And he did a stunning, if somewhat shocking, job. Holmes, 33, is always pretty, but this cover takes Tom Cruise's ex-wife to a different level. No Joey from "Dawson's Creek" here. With smokey eyeshadow, nude lipcolor, and long wavy hair, she looks like a different woman.

New life, new look?

Do you prefer this glamour girl Holmes, or her old self? Tell us what you think on Facebook.

Family Game Nights Are Back in Style | Scalliwag Toys

If there has been one happy ? if unintended ? consequence of the videogame?s takeover of children?s leisure time, it has been that a lasting love of gaming has been created in Generation Y and their younger siblings.? Kids who grew up on Super Mario Bros., who spent whole weekends defeating every level of Mega-Man, who cut their teeth on the (ultra-violent, for the times) Wolfenstein 3-D, found that although they enjoyed playing against the computer opponents, they also loved sitting on the sofa with their friends and blasting away at the opposition together ? or fighting each other, as the case might be.

And now they?ve grown up, and although they still love video games, these kids have discovered that awesome games come in non-electric forms as well, that can be played anywhere with a flat surface and a bit of light, and never require batteries or a recharge.? Board games and card games are undergoing a boom such as we haven?t seen in almost 30 years in the toy business, as young adults (some with children of their own by now) bring their love of gaming full-circle.

These gamers are sophisticated, and they expect to be challenged by the games as well as by their opponents.? They are looking for games that are designed in such a way that winning requires skill as well as luck; games that call upon the players to make decisions; games where the outcome is uncertain right up to the end of the game, so that no one is languishing far behind and certain to lose interest.? And game designers have come through for them.

Settlers of Catan from Mayfair Games

The grand-daddy of strategy board games with broad appeal is probably Settlers of Catan from Mayfair Games.? This classic has it all:? a board composed of hexagonal resource tiles dealt out randomly at the start of each game (so that each new game is played upon essentially a different board); a series of agonizing decisions to be made and no clear path to victory; and a game mechanic that ensures every player is active on every turn, so that players don?t lose interest.? The opportunity for players to sabotage each other?s play keeps things interesting, too.? The original Settlers of Catan is designed for three or four players, and a game takes approximately 45 minutes, short enough to fit a grudge match into the evening.? There are thematic expansions available for sale that enlarge the scope of the game beyond the original, as well as numerical expansions that allow five or six total players.? Each kind of expansion will also make the game take longer, as well.? Ages 10 and up.

Gloom from Atlas Games

A slightly newer game with a darker appeal is Gloom, from publisher Atlas Games.? Gloom is a card game in which each player controls the fate of a different family, but ? as you might guess from the game title ? the object of the game is to help your eccentric families suffer mightily (and more than their opponents do) before shuffling off this mortal coil.? Yes, that?s right ? players want to kill off their family members as speedily and as horribly as possible, while simultaneously trying visit happy occurrences upon their opponents? family members.

Gloom character card and transparent overlay modifier cards

Family members (such as Angel the Starry-Eyed Serial Killer or Elissandre de Ville, the Illustrated Lady) may be visited with such unfortunate events as being ?Pierced by Porcupines? or ?Pursued by Poodles? ? which would lower the characters? self-worth points (that?s good) ? or with happy events such as being ?Blessed by the Bishop? or ?Wondrously Well Wed?, which would raise self-worth points (bad if it?s you, super if it happens to your opponents).? The game tends to encourage a sort of rambling narrative, as these cards are put down on top of the character cards (the cards are clear overlays, so that the character card may be seen below).? It becomes a game in itself to try to logically incorporate the next card into the storyline!

Gloom is lots of fun in a macabre and slightly twisted way (after all, you are trying to do in your own characters in the most grisly, as well as the quickest, way possible).? Two to four players (best with four), about 60 minutes or less, if you?re speedy.

As basketball superstar Michael Jordan famously said:? Just play.? Have fun.? Enjoy the game.*

* I know he was talking about basketball, but it applies equally here.? If not more so, since maybe I could beat Michael Jordan at Settlers or Gloom, but I?m pretty sure I would lose a game of basketball playing against him. You have to pick your battles.

Dismembered mom's torso found in floating suitcase

Aaron Vincent Elkaim / The Canadian Press via AP, file

A police dog searches the banks of the Credit River in Mississauga, Ont., after police discovered a female severed head on Aug. 16. A post?mortem examination has now identified the remains as those of Guang Hua Liu, a 41-year-old former spa owner.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

TORONTO -- Human remains found in a suitcase floating in Lake Ontario near Toronto this week belonged to a single mother who went missing early last month and whose body parts had been scattered throughout the city, police confirmed Thursday.

Toronto police said a post?mortem examination identified the remains as those of Guang Hua Liu, a 41-year-old former spa owner and mother of three.

The Toronto Sun reported that the suitcase was discovered floating about 1.6 miles offshore by boaters on Wednesday.

Local resident Blaine Reardon told the Toronto Star he saw two boaters towing the luggage ashore. The newspaper described it as a "large, black, wheeled suitcase."?Local media said it contained a human torso.

Liu was reported missing in early August. Hikers saw her foot floating in a river just west of Toronto a few days later. Police then found her head and hands elsewhere.

A subsequent search unearthed more of Guang's body parts in the suburb of Scarborough, in the city's east end.

Estranged boyfriend held
Speaking to the Toronto Sun, Peel Regional Police Constable Fiona Thivierge said: "We are hoping that torso will lead us to understand how she came to die."

Chunqi Jiang, a construction worker and recently estranged boyfriend of the victim, was arrested last week and charged with second-degree murder.

The grisly details of the case have drawn comparisons to the death earlier this year of Jun Lin. The Chinese student's severed hands and feet were mailed to the offices of political parties in Ottawa and to schools in Vancouver, while other body parts were found in Montreal.

Luka Magnotta, a small-time Canadian porn actor, has been charged with Lin's murder and has pleaded not guilty.

After an international manhunt, authorities apprehended Canadian porn actor Luka Magnotta, who is alleged to have murdered, dismembered, and cannibalized a man thought to be his boyfriend. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Internet Security | The Aussie Digger : Home of all Australian ...

Do you feel like you can?t go anywhere without big brother watching you these days? A group called Anti Sec claims to have hacked into an FBI agent?s laptop, accessing over 12 million Apple Unique Device Identifiers. So, all of the data was originally picked up by the FBI from Apple devices, like iPhones, iPads and iPods to track your every move.

Small and medium technology businesses are being recruited by MI5 and GCHQ to help develop gadgets to spot and tackle terrorists.

GCHQ was said to be keen to improve its systems for monitoring information on the internet to trace suspects online.

Jonathan Evans, the Director General, said Mi5 was investigating ?cyber compromises? in more than a dozen companies while one major London-based business had lost ?800 million in one attack alone.

?Vulnerabilities in the internet are being exploited aggressively not just by criminals but also by states,? Mr Evans said.

?And the extent of what is going on is astonishing ? with industrial-scale processes involving many thousands of people lying behind both State sponsored cyber espionage and organised cyber crime.

?This is a threat to the integrity, confidentiality and availability of government information but also to business and to academic institutions.?

Earlier today, Nokia announced Lumia 920, which comes with PureView, the same technology which received a decent response for 41 MP Nokia 808 device. During its press event, Nokia gave a look at the new PureView?s main feature: optical image stabilization (OIS). The idea behind this new feature is that it stabilizes the video you?re recording, giving you a more professional look instead of the amateur shaky-cam effect. To demonstrate this technology, Nokia played an impressive ad which show cases a side by side comparison of the video shot without OIS and with OIS. Obviously, the video shot without OIS doesn?t look very good, whereas the video shot with OIS activated looks excellent. Strangely, Nokia faked this PureView ad!

Eritreans stranded for week on Israel-Egypt border

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel is refusing to allow entry to a small group of African migrants huddled at a desert border fence with Egypt, officials said Wednesday, underscoring a toughened entry policy.

The Eritrean group appeared to number a dozen, including two women and a teenager, according to activists and an AP photographer who was at the site Tuesday.

They were crowded beside Israel's new border fence, shaded by blue-striped plastic they hoisted above themselves.

The group had been there for about a week, said Ran Cohen of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, which helps migrants.

Israel's military has since sealed off the area. A spokesman said soldiers were giving the group water and food.

Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai said they will not be allowed in, because that would encourage more African migrants to make the trip.

"If there were no fence there, and we were not determined (to stop the influx of migrants), then that number would become 1 million people," he said.

Israel has almost completed a barrier along 200 kilometers (125 miles) of its border with Egypt to block African migrants and militants from the lawless Sinai.

Officials have also expanded the capacity of detention centers to ensure those entering are immediately held, said Cohen of the rights group.

Most of the Africans are from Sudan and Eritrea. Under international law, Israel cannot return people to those two countries because of their poor human rights records. Many have settled in Tel Aviv, changing the face of its southern neighborhoods.

The tough measures came after Israeli officials spent years grappling with how to halt the flow of Africans who began entering after Egyptian police killed 20 Sudanese asylum seekers during a demonstration in Cairo in 2005. Their numbers swelled as news of safety and jobs in Israel spread.

Many Israelis fear the continued flow of non-Jewish Africans is eroding the country's Jewish character.

One-fifth of the Israel's citizens are Arabs, there are tens of thousands migrant workers overstaying visas, and about 70,000 Africans.

Other Israelis say their country should not send back those fleeing persecution.

"People are running away from killings and a dictatorship. We are obligated to help them," said Maayan Zak. She and other activists tried to reach the area this week to deliver food.

In a previous standoff with four Eritreans who refused to leave the fence last month, the migrants were allowed in after four days.

An Israeli official said that no "international body" determined that Sudanese or Eritreans would be persecuted in Egypt. He said Israel had "no legal obligation" to let them in. He spoke on condition n of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

In an email response, he did not relate to widely documented claims that Sinai smugglers frequently torture, rape and sometimes enslave Africans in their territory.

U.N. official William Tall said Israel should allow the group in and then review their claims to see if they are genuine refugees.

"These people are expressing a fear to be returned," Tall said. "They (Israel) can't deny them access to (its) territory."

AZAZ, Syria (AP) ? There were a few scattered reminders of whose room it had been before the bombs hit ? a framed picture of Barbie and another of a kitten with a pink bow still hanging on the cracked plaster wall, a doll and two teddy bears resting on a pile of rubble.

The house was one of more than a dozen in the al-Harah al-Qibiliyah neighborhood in the town of Azaz, north of Aleppo, to be destroyed in an Aug. 15 airstrike. Survivors and rights groups say more than 40 people, including children and old people, were killed.

On his first trip back to his brother's home, Mahmoud Makour sifted through the rubble of what remained. He collected the stuffed animals and a few Lego pieces that belonged to his 11-year-old niece, Sara, and his 1 ?-year-old nephew, Youssuf, and set them aside. Both children, along with their mother, were killed in the air raid, he said.

"Are these the toys of terrorists?" Makour asked. "That war criminal Youssuf, he was a war criminal! He was a year and a half old. He was conspiring against (President) Bashar Assad, that child!"

He then gently placed the toys on a slab of debris, unsure what to do with them next.

Over the past week, survivors and relatives have returned daily to collect from the rubble what can be salvaged. They also relive the day of the airstrike.

As Ahmad Khairo tells it, he had just returned home from his barber shop when the bombs hit.

"As I stepped into my house I felt the ground shaking under my feet and the door opened by itself and I fell to the ground," the 37-year-old said. "I heard the sound of my wife screaming."

He picked himself up and rushed inside to check on his family. His mother was unconscious. After she came to, she quickly recited the Muslim declaration of faith.

"She thought it was the apocalypse," Khairo said.

Youssuf Dannoun used to own a clothes shop, but has been unemployed since he stopped paying rent on the store and people stopped worrying about buying clothes. With a bloody civil war engulfing the country, survival now takes precedence.

On the day of the airstrike, Dannoun recalls being with his wife on the roof of their one-story house while he fixed their water barrel.

"Suddenly I noticed the jets and within few seconds, a light followed by dust and enormous pressure threw me back from the roof onto the ground," he said. "My wife tried to hold onto a metal bar, which went through her arm, but luckily she was lightly injured and I was hurt in my leg but nothing serious."

Dannoun, his wife and four children all survived the bombing.

Thread: THE Nitty Gritty - Family Woodworking

OK, that might seem like a strange title for a work in progress but I think after you see this project you"ll understand the reason. I've been doing Intarsia for a long time and pride myself in putting lots of detail into my pieces by using only natural colored wood, detail carving and using lots of itty bitty pieces to add as much realism as I can to my work.
Last week I was asked to make some custom Beer Tap Handles for a guy here in town that has his own home brewery. He sent me a photo of the logo that he has and asked if I could carve or etch the logo onto the handle somehow.

Picture of logo

Don't do much carving or etching I said but I do Intarsia which is a unique type of woodworking that might be something you'd like to see. Invited him to the shop to see some of my work. We discussed pricing, woods, sizes and I was given the go-ahead to get em done as an intarsia. Talk about a challenge!!! Like I said, I like working with small pieces but I gotta tell you , I might have bitten off more than I can chew with this project.
Just to give an idea of the size of these things, the total width of the logo is 4 1/4" so keeping the scale correct means that the inlay has to be contained in a 3 " circle. So the letters are less than 1/4" tall. I've cut some pretty small pieces before but to cut and fit letters this small and inlay them into a background--well that's just getting down to the nitty gritty part of this type of work.

That little black spec is the letter "E"

So after a little trial and error (LOTS) and learning a few new cutting and sanding techniques here is the first of 4 Rabid Otter logo's. Still have to turn the handle and glue everything in but I do like a challenge.

Obama: GOP Convention Was from Era of Black-and-White TV

President Obama didn't think much of the Republican National Convention.

He told some 10,000 people Saturday at a rally in Urbandale, Iowa, that the agenda set out by nominee Mitt Romney and other speakers in Tampa was "better suited for the last century" more often than not.

(RELATED: Obama Jumps Into National Security Void)

"It was a rerun. We?d seen it before. You might as well have watched it on a black-and-white TV," Obama said, clearly enjoying himself. "If you didn?t DVR it, let me recap it for you. Everything is bad, it?s Obama?s fault, and Gov. Romney is the only one who knows the secret to creating jobs and growing the economy."

He added, "There was a lot of talk about hard truths and bold choices, but nobody ever actually bothered to tell you what they were."

(RELATED: Team Obama Thinks This Race is In the Bag)

He said Romney "did not offer a single new idea, just retreads of the same old policies that have been sticking it to the middle class for years." He told the audience, "you've lived through it and you can't afford to repeat it."

The crowd booed when Obama opened his speech with a mention of the GOP convention. "Don't boo," he told them. "Vote."

Video of the GOP convention: Take a peek behind the curtain

The Monitor's Warren Richey was in Tampa, Fla., last week, cameras in hand, to capture the wacky theater that is a political convention. The GOP convention you saw on TV was the scripted version. There's oh so much more.

By Warren Richey,?Staff writer / September 1, 2012

A short history of the 2012 Republican National Convention

Republicans from across the nation descended on Tampa, Fla., last week for their national political convention. The mission: nominate GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

The gathering began under a threat from tropical storm Isaac and ended in the blazing Tampa heat. Expected massive protests by anarchists and the Occupy Movement never materialized ? perhaps in part because of an overwhelming contingent of police and security officials.

Security around the Tampa Bay Times Forum often resembled a military outpost with an eight-foot-high steel fence and concrete barriers patrolled by Florida National Guard troops armed with assault rifles. Reporters lugging their gear the half-mile through the security zone in the intense heat and humidity were funneled into two checkpoints with TSA specialists, medal detectors, and X-ray machines. ??

Even well within the convention site, reporters were continually asked to show their convention credentials.

The real action took place inside the forum on the convention floor. That?s where Monitor correspondent Warren Richey spent most of his time ? with cameras at the ready.

What unfolded represented a new level of political wackiness. Any item of clothing that could possibly support an American flag or elephant theme was on full display among the delegates and other convention participants. Lady Liberty made an appearance all the way from Long Beach, Calif., in a Colonial gown with a flag theme. A Kansas Jayhawk patrolled the floor, as did an Abe Lincoln look-alike who doubled as a delegate from Missouri.

Here is Warren Richey?s six-minute take on the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Hands-on with Sony's latest at IFA [video]

Let's do this in one fell swoop, shall we? Here's a walkthrough with all of Sony's new kit at IFA in Berlin. Seven minutes in Sony smartphone heaven, if you will. The glitz! The glamour! The glossy fingerprints!

Seriously, though, Here's a quick look at the new Sony Xperia T, Xperia TX, Xperia J, Xperia V, Acro S, the Xperia Tablet S -- and some waterproof demos as well.

Accessories? Oh, we got 'em, too.

Oh, and Ice Cream Sandwich on the Xperia Ion, which hasn't actually been pushed out yet.

So, yeah. A whole lot of kit from Sony at IFA. Enjoy!
