South Sudan: Full oil production could take 1 year
JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? South Sudan says it will up to a year to restart full oil production in some of its oil fields due to damage done by Sudanese forces during clashes last in April.
Speaking Thursday, South Sudanese Minister of Petroleum and Mining Stephen Dhieu Dau said assessments are being conducted by teams from the ministry and oil operators in the country to determine exactly how long it will take to resume pumping oil. All of South Sudan's oil is produced in Unity and Upper Nile states, along the border with Sudan.
According to the Minister, Upper Nile's well could take four to six months to resume full production, while the Unity field could take between ten and twelve months.

Today in the Facebook group, there was a deep conversation about health and fitness.? It really inspired me to write this post.?? At first glance, I look like I am in pretty good health. The most common comment nowadays --3 months post-partum-- is that I don't even look like I just had a baby. ? Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter
But there is more to my story....
My most recent pregnancy was high risk.? Not only was I at risk for early labor, but I was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes.? Diabetes doesn't run in my family and I am in pretty good health, yet there I was pricking myself everyday to check my glucose.? (That placenta. I tell ya. ? It can interfere with insulin. In my case, it gave me diabetes.)? If you know anything about gestational diabetes, you probably know that it puts you at a higher risk to develop Type II diabetes later on in life.? And although I don't have any other risk factors, I am forever scared straight.? Juice? No thanks. Candy? In moderation. Carbs? Brown please.? That is my life now, because diabetes is just not for me.??
In addition to healthy eating, it is also important to exercise to reduce the risk of Type II Diabetes.? Remember, when I said I was at risk for early labor? Well, I was banned from exercise to keep my bun in the oven.? My last pregnancy, I exercised throughout my pregnancy.? This time. Nada. Zilch. Nothing.? So although this time around I gained 20 pounds instead of 30 pounds, my journey to my fit self seems a little bit harder.
As many women trying to get back to optimum health, I have excuses. Although as the mom of newborn and a toddler, they are pretty valid.? Lack of sleep. Long days.? Crying babies.? Valid, right?? But at the same time, there is the saying that if you wait for the optimal conditions... it may never happen. So I don't beat myself up, but I try to do what I can until my youngest child is a little more predictable and my body feels a little bit more normal. (It took about 6 months for me to feel normal again when I had my first child.)
Here is what I do, to make it though:
- Make it a habit. Period.? If being unhealthy is your current habit, then make being healthy your new habit. It takes 28 days to start a new habit. Start today.?
- I eat well.. for the most part.? If I put good in, then I'm not adding on more pounds. I view food as fuel.??
- Eat protein snacks throughout the day.? Eating protein helps you keep full, and fights the cravings for unhealthy snacks.? It also helps your metabolism to eat every 2-3 hours.
- I drink water.? Sodas and soft drinks are easy ways to add calories to your diet.? Cut them out and give your body what it needs... water.
- I do high intensity workouts in short intervals to maximize my workout.? If you are short on time, then the key is to work multiple body parts, with fewer breaks. I'm currently doing the Jillian Michaels, "Ripped in 30".? She urges you to give it all you have for that 25 minutes.? You will thank yourself later.
- Ask yourself if it is worth it. Before I eat junk food, I ask myself if I'm going to kick myself later and say that it wasn't worth the calories. Is my mouth watering just thinking about it, I eat it. If not, then I find a healthier option to satiate my appetite.

Beltre lifts Rangers past Rays

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, including the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning, to lead the Texas Rangers to a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.
Elvis Andrus scored on Beltre's single to give the AL West leaders a series-opening win. Nelson Cruz also homered and Mike Olt added an RBI for Texas.
Derek Holland (9-6) got the win, giving up five runs - three earned - on six hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Relievers Alexi Ogando and Mike Adams, and closer Joe Nathan struck out six of the nine hitters they faced in working perfect seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Nathan earned his 23rd consecutive save opportunity and 26th this season.
Tampa Bay ace David Price (16-5) snapped a stretch of 12 consecutive quality starts in which he had pitched at least seven innings. The lefty, who entered with a majors-low 2.28 ERA and tied for the league lead for victories, didn't make it to the fifth, giving up six runs on 10 hits in four innings.
In eight career regular-season starts against the Rangers, Price is 1-3 with a 6.04 ERA. In four starts at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, his ERA is 10.26.
The Rays entered with the AL's best road record (35-27), but found they were no match for Beltre.
Beltre, who was selected AL player of the week after a game of three home runs and another in which he hit for the cycle, is hitting .385 with six homers and 13 RBIs in his last eight games.
Beltre, who reached base a fourth time with a walk in the seventh, and Cruz had back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second to erase a 2-0 deficit - the first time Price has allowed consecutive homers in his career.
Olt's groundout to shortstop Ben Zobrist drove in the Rangers' third run.
Beltre's double with no outs in the third scored Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton to make the score 5-3. Price was able to limit the damage by retiring the next three hitters on two groundouts and a strikout of Geovany Soto.
B.J. Upton's run-scoring triple and Zobrist's RBI single tied the score at 5-all in the fifth.
An error led to two unearned runs for the Rays in the first inning.
Upton reached base on a fielding miscue by Andrus at short, who then dropped a potential double play relay on the next hitter, Ben Zobrist, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Evan Longoria, who was 2 for 4, then took a 3-2 pitch deep off the left-field foul pole for a home run.
The Rays' Nos. 5-9 hitters went 0 for 18 with eight strikeouts.

Wishful Thinking About Religious Freedom And Gay Marriage ...
One of the reasons that social conservatives oppose gay marriage is the belief that if it is legalized in a state, private institutions, like religious employers, and religious schools, will be forced to treat gay unions the same as heterosexual marriages. The unstated assumption they have is that if they can just block gay marriage, no bossy government official will be able to force them to treat gay unions like straight marriages.
But this assumption is just wishful thinking: blocking gay marriage solves nothing, because bossy civil-rights bureaucrats and liberal judges (most state judiciaries, and virtually all civil-rights bureaucrats, are liberal) will force them to treat gay couples as if they were married couples, even if gay couples cannot formally get married in the state.? Multiple court rulings and administrative rulings show that this is so, by effectively ordering religious businesses and schools to treat unmarried gay couples as if they were married, under existing state laws and municipal ordinances banning private-sector discrimination against gays.
I have been one of the most outspoken critics of these rulings restricting religious freedom; and I have repeatedly defended the First Amendment rights of social conservatives to express their views about homosexuality (for example, I have criticized politicians? harassment of Chick-fil-A over its CEO?s opposition to same-sex marriage, which was constitutionally protected speech, see here, here, here, and here). And I can tell you that banning gay marriage does not solve this problem, it just causes other problems, such as creating perverse incentives for gays (and occasionally harming heterosexuals).
Blocking gay marriage (unfairly) prevents committed monogamous gay couples in long-term relationships from accessing useful government benefits limited to legal spouses (while also shielding them, ironically enough, from ?marriage penalties? in the tax code and welfare system). It also sometimes results in gay couples in short-term relationships unfairly obtaining certain government benefits available only to heterosexuals who are married (and thus not in short-term, non-legally-binding relationships), and increases the risk that private institutions will be forced to treat gay couples the same as married heterosexuals even if they are not in a long-term relationship akin to marriage. Banning gay marriage thus reduces incentives for long-term monogamy among gays, even though monogamy is as desirable among gays as among heterosexuals (since it can reduce the incidence of AIDS, and promote family stability, such as households in which gay couples are raising children).
Banning gay marriage generally doesn?t protect those who have religious objections to gay marriage from being forced to treat gay couples as if they were married. In 2001, Yeshiva University was ordered to allow same-sex couples in its married dormitory, pursuant to New York City?s municipal anti-discrimination law, which bans sexual orientation discrimination by private institutions. Since gay couples could not marry at the time (the New York Court of Appeals later upheld the state?s ban on gay marriage, which was later legalized by the state legislature), the courts held that it was discriminatory to require gays to be married to live in married-student housing (never mind that heterosexuals had to be married to live there). The New York Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the gay students suing Yeshiva had stated a ?disparate impact? discrimination claim against it, because it was axiomatic that requiring something that gays could not legally satisfy (getting married) was disproportionately burdensome to them. The net result of this ruling was to pressure private universities to treat gay couples the same as married straight couples even when their relationships were not as long-lasting as marriages typically are.
If gay marriage had been legal at the time, Yeshiva could probably have limited its married student housing to just those gays who had chosen to enter into the solemn commitment of marriage, rather than all gay couples, since gays could have gotten married in order to seek such housing, and requiring marriage for eligibility would not have an obvious disparate impact. But instead, due to gay marriage being illegal, it got stuck with a ruling that effectively forced it to treat all gay couples as being akin to married heterosexual couples, rather than just gay couples who are married in all but name. Gay marriage being illegal broadened the assault on its religious freedom, rather than preventing it.
In New Mexico, a wedding photographer was ordered to pay $6,000 after she refused to film a gay couple?s commitment ceremony, even though the state did not recognize same-sex marriages or civil unions at the time. The state appeals court upheld the penalty, ruling that the photographer had violated New Mexico?s statute banning sexual orientation discrimination in public accommodations, which defines many private businesses as public accommodations. (I previously explained why this ruling violated First Amendment free speech rights as well as state religious-freedom guarantees.)
There are isolated cases where a state?s lack? of legal recognition for both gay marriage and civil unions helped a defendant avoid a lawsuit. A country club was held not to have violated California?s Unruh Act banning private-sector sexual orientation discrimination against customers when it did not treat a lesbian couple as if they were married, at a time when California law did not yet recognize marriage or civil unions. By contrast, it was held to have violated their rights after California recognized civil unions (but not gay marriages) when it refused later on to treat their legally-recognized civil union the same as a heterosexual marriage, since the state supreme court considered their civil union close enough to a marriage that they had to be treated the same (even though a civil union was not precisely the same as a marriage).
Unfortunately for social conservatives, while half the public opposes gay marriage, a substantial majority favors either gay marriage or civil unions, and even if social conservatives manage to stop gay marriage, they will not likely be able to prevent civil unions of some sort. States and municipalities increasing recognize civil unions if not marriages. So the few cases like this one furnish little or no reason to oppose same-sex marriage. (And they are partly offset by court rulings like the one involving Yeshiva University that make disparate impact law a greater threat to religious freedom in states that deny legal recognition to same-sex unions than in those that permit it.)
Banning federal recognition of gay marriage through laws like the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) results in what the Supreme Court once referred to as ?the indiscriminate imposition of inequalities,? resulting in a strange state of affairs that discriminates against both gays and heterosexuals in different ways. The lack of government recognition for gay marriage means that the government cannot give committed, monogamous gay couples certain benefits that are specifically reserved by federal law for spouses, even when the gay partners are emotionally inseparable (like the right to take your European-born spouse with you when you move back to America from an overseas job, which is possible through visas and green cards available only to legal spouses under the immigration laws). But it also makes it easier for gay partners in short-term relationships that do not reflect any marital-like commitment to access government benefits that are not specifically reserved by federal law for spouses, but that the government only makes available to married heterosexuals, not unmarried heterosexuals. The Obama administration recently awarded various household benefits to gay partners of federal employees. These benefits are not available to unmarried heterosexuals, because, the administration says, heterosexuals can get married to access them. But they are available to unmarried gay partners, because they can?t enter into federally recognized marriages (most states don?t recognize gay marriage, and DOMA prohibits the federal government from recognizing gay marriages even if they are legal under state law). If gay partners could get legally married, the benefits could more easily be limited to those that deserve them most, by virtue of their demonstrated marital commitment.
In the absence of gay marriage, liberal judges pressure states to give benefits to unmarried gay couples who have not made any marital-like commitment. In Diaz v. Brewer (2011), the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals approved a lawsuit against Arizona, which has a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, after its state universities cut off certain benefits to gay and straight domestic partners, which previously had been available to both spouses and domestic partners.? The Ninth Circuit held that Arizona?s action had a disparate impact on gays, because they, unlike heterosexuals, could not marry. (As Ed Whelan notes, this constitutional ruling against Arizona was incorrect, since the Constitution, unlike many civil-rights statutes, does not forbid ?disparate impact,? as the Supreme Court has made clear in Personnel Administrator of Massachusetts v. Feeney (1979) and Washington v. Davis (1976).) Similarly, even respected, non-ideological judges have cited the fact that gays cannot marry to issue court rulings permitting local governments to discriminate against heterosexuals in government benefits, like refusing to allow unmarried heterosexual domestic partners to receive benefits available to unmarried gay domestic partners, even though some of those unmarried gay partners would not have gotten married even if they had the right to do so. Judge Posner?s decision for a unanimous federal appeals court in Irizarry v. Board of Education of Chicago (2001) is the classic example.
Banning legal recognition of gay marriages not only deprives gay couples of important intangible benefits that often cost taxpayers nothing (like the right to have your spouse immigrate and be with you when you return to the U.S. from overseas), but also deprives taxpayers of increased revenue that would result from recognizing gay marriage. Federally recognizing gay marriages ? that is, repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) ??would bring in at least $1 billion in additional tax revenue, partly because couples comprised of two wage earners are taxed on their social security benefits at lower income levels, and pay more in taxes over their lifetimes, and receive fewer means-tested benefits, if they are married than if they are unmarried, due to marriage penalties contained in federal tax law and means-tested government benefit programs. The interaction of DOMA with California?s community-property laws costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
State constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage can backfire and harm heterosexuals. Virginia?s anti-gay-marriage, state constitutional amendment, which forbids recognizing any gay union, was? interpreted by a trial judge to bar cutting off alimony to a cohabiting ex-wife, because the ex-wife was a lesbian who chose to cohabit with a woman rather than a man. The judge ruled that the wife?s cohabitation could not be recognized as a legal union for purposes of whether she had entered into a new union that eliminated the need for spousal support. (Never mind that her new partner made her less in need of support.) The judge?s ruling was only overturned by the appeals court on other grounds, without resolving whether the state constitutional amendment would, as a general rule, affect alimony to ex-wives in lesbian relationships.
If gays could marry, and enter federally recognized marriages, they would have an incentive to lobby to get rid of existing marriage penalties in the tax code and government-benefit laws. Perhaps in reaction to their history of being demonized and discriminated against, gays participate in the political process to a degree that is all out of proportion to their tiny percentage of the general population, giving them considerable ?political clout? (contrary to conventional wisdom, gays may account for as little as 2 percent of the population, notes a senior editor at The Atlantic; but they contribute many millions of dollars annually to the political process). By contrast, married heterosexuals are less likely to be involved in interest-group lobbying when they have small children, which keep them enormously busy. That, and the dwindling percentage of the population that is married compared to 40 years ago, has made it increasingly possible for liberal politicians (who draw their support mostly from the unmarried, such as single mothers who often rely on government assistance) to sock married people with massive marriage penalties in the tax code (like Obamacare?s additional tax on investment income starting in 2013, which affects a married couple who each have only $125,000 in income, but affect unmarried couples only if each has an income of $200,000.?Obamacare also discriminates against lower-income married couples in its healthcare subsidies. (Gay couples sometimes have children, too, but they are statistically less likely to have children, and to have fewer children even when they have kids; it is harder to have a large family when you have to adopt or use a surrogate or sperm donor.) Letting gays, who are two-thirds liberal, get married may make it harder for liberal politicians to use married couples ? who are now mostly Republicans ? as their financial cash register for the welfare state.
As Rep. Thomas Petri (R-Wisc.) has noted, ?The decline in marriage and the rise in the number of children born to unmarried mothers are concentrated among lower-income families. One reason is that lower-income couples will often lose money if they get married. Many federal benefits such as food stamps and the earned income tax credit phase out as income rises. Under federal law, if two individuals earning the minimum wage choose to marry, combining their incomes results in the loss of some $7,000 in federal benefits. The result: Fewer marriages, more births outside marriage and reduced prospects for rising into the middle class.?
If people want to protect marriage and the family, they should focus on eliminating these marriage penalties, rather than wasting time trying to ban gay marriages. Indeed, they should be happy to enlist gay people as new recruits to the institution of marriage. The more broadly that traditional values and bourgeois virtues like marriage and monogamy spread throughout the population ? including the gay community ? the better. Ancient records shed light on Italian earthquakes (Aquila area)
ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? When a damaging earthquake struck the area of L'Aquila in central Italy in 2009, it was the latest in the region's long history of strong and persistent quakes. The rich recorded history of settlement in the area, along with oral traditions, archaeological excavations, inscriptions and medieval texts, and offer insight into how often the region might expect destructive earthquakes.
But according to a new study by Emanuela Guidoboni and colleagues, the historical record on ancient and medieval earthquakes comes with its own shortcomings that must be addressed before the seismic history of L'Aquila can be useful in assessing the current seismic hazard in this area.
To illustrate some of these potential gaps in knowledge, the researchers combed through written records and information from archaeological excavations, covering the period from ancient Roman occupation in the first century A.D. to the late Middle Ages of the 15th century A.D. The authors say, researchers must piece together information ranging from collapsed roofs within an ancient Roman city, to the evidences of rebuilding damaged baths and cisterns. In later years, better written records offer more detail on the specific location and size of earthquakes occurring in 1349, 1456, and 1461 (a long seismic sequence).
The authors say that the early to middle Middle Ages, in particular, have a dearth of information that needs to be addressed to have a more complete picture of the region's seismic history. Overall, the records confirm that the region appears to have been host to a high number of strong earthquakes. The authors also point out a tendency in the area to produce multiple and nearly simultaneous seismic events that vary considerably in their impact.
As Guidoboni and her colleagues note, the earthquakes have had a strong influence in the region's economy and culture. It is a impact that can be seen clearly in the historical records, such as a written account of a large earthquake in 1315. During that quake, warring factions in the town came together after they "were struck with fear at the strong shaking when a frightening earthquake soon afterwards struck that place in a terrible way," the official account says, "and they abandoned their wrongdoing and returned to the narrow path of their conscience."

Empathetic children more likely to effectively manage stress, behave prosocially
COLUMBIA, Mo. Infants innately relieve stress by crying, turning their heads or maintaining eye contact. Adults manage emotional tension using problem-solving or by seeking support. A new study by a University of Missouri human development expert describes how adolescents' developing personalities and coping habits affect their behaviors toward others.
"We're each born with some personality tendencies; for example, we see that babies are fussy or calm," said Gustavo Carlo, the Millsap Professor of Diversity in the MU Department of Human Development and Family Studies. "Those characteristics can change over time as people experience certain events or as a result of their parents, peers or communities. At the same time, as we get older, our personalities become more stable."
Carlo and his colleagues surveyed 1,557 students ages 12-15 years old in Valencia, Spain, to measure the adolescents' feelings toward others, their past prosocial and physically aggressive behaviors, their emotional stability, and how they manage stress.
Carlo found that empathetic adolescents were more likely to use problem-focused coping, which aims to reduce or eliminate the source of the stress. These adolescents also were more likely to perform prosocial behaviors that benefit others, such as volunteering, donating money or helping friends with problems. Conversely, emotionally unstable, impulsive adolescents relied more on emotion-focused coping tactics such as venting, avoidance or distraction, and they showed more frequent signs of aggression.
"Empathetic kids are generally very good at regulating their emotions and tend not to lose their tempers," Carlo said. "When you're good at regulating your emotions, you're less concerned about yourself and more considerate of other people. On the other hand, impulsive children are more self-focused and have difficulty engaging in problem-focused coping."
Teaching adolescents multiple ways to handle stress will help them decide which coping techniques to use based on the unique situations, Carlo said. In some cases, people may use both emotion-focused and problem-focused coping, while in others, one might be more beneficial. For example, emotion-focused coping might be more constructive when children witness their parents' divorces because the kids cannot change those situations. On the other hand, planning ahead to study for tests or complete homework is a problem-focused coping technique that can help adolescents effectively ease academic stress.
"Sometimes we get stuck dealing with stress in one way because it was successful in the past; that coping style may not be effective with other stressors and in other situations," Carlo said. "There is more than one way to cope in situations, and people need to know when to apply which coping mechanisms."

The study, "The interplay of emotional instability, empathy, and coping on prosocial and aggressive behaviors," was published in Personality and Individual Differences. Empathetic children more likely to effectively manage stress, behave prosocially
COLUMBIA, Mo. Infants innately relieve stress by crying, turning their heads or maintaining eye contact. Adults manage emotional tension using problem-solving or by seeking support. A new study by a University of Missouri human development expert describes how adolescents' developing personalities and coping habits affect their behaviors toward others.
"We're each born with some personality tendencies; for example, we see that babies are fussy or calm," said Gustavo Carlo, the Millsap Professor of Diversity in the MU Department of Human Development and Family Studies. "Those characteristics can change over time as people experience certain events or as a result of their parents, peers or communities. At the same time, as we get older, our personalities become more stable."
Carlo and his colleagues surveyed 1,557 students ages 12-15 years old in Valencia, Spain, to measure the adolescents' feelings toward others, their past prosocial and physically aggressive behaviors, their emotional stability, and how they manage stress.
Carlo found that empathetic adolescents were more likely to use problem-focused coping, which aims to reduce or eliminate the source of the stress. These adolescents also were more likely to perform prosocial behaviors that benefit others, such as volunteering, donating money or helping friends with problems. Conversely, emotionally unstable, impulsive adolescents relied more on emotion-focused coping tactics such as venting, avoidance or distraction, and they showed more frequent signs of aggression.
"Empathetic kids are generally very good at regulating their emotions and tend not to lose their tempers," Carlo said. "When you're good at regulating your emotions, you're less concerned about yourself and more considerate of other people. On the other hand, impulsive children are more self-focused and have difficulty engaging in problem-focused coping."
Teaching adolescents multiple ways to handle stress will help them decide which coping techniques to use based on the unique situations, Carlo said. In some cases, people may use both emotion-focused and problem-focused coping, while in others, one might be more beneficial. For example, emotion-focused coping might be more constructive when children witness their parents' divorces because the kids cannot change those situations. On the other hand, planning ahead to study for tests or complete homework is a problem-focused coping technique that can help adolescents effectively ease academic stress.
"Sometimes we get stuck dealing with stress in one way because it was successful in the past; that coping style may not be effective with other stressors and in other situations," Carlo said. "There is more than one way to cope in situations, and people need to know when to apply which coping mechanisms."

The study, "The interplay of emotional instability, empathy, and coping on prosocial and aggressive behaviors," was published in Personality and Individual Differences. Carlo's coauthors included researchers from Chatham University in Pennsylvania and the University of Valencia in Spain.

MINSK, Belarus (AP) ? It's probably the first time in history that teddy bears have defeated generals.
Belarus' authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko has sacked two of the nation's top defense officials after two Swedish advertising agency employees piloted a light plane into the country's heavily guarded airspace, dropping 879 teddy bears decked out in parachutes and slogans supporting human rights.
Officials in the ex-Soviet state denied the July 4 incident until Lukashenko called a meeting last week to scold authorities for allowing such a "provocation."
The Belarusian ruler nicknamed "Europe's last dictator" on Tuesday fired the nation's air defense chief and the head of the Border Guards service and reprimanded several other top security officials, his office said Wednesday.
Thomas Mazetti and Hannah Frey, the two Swedes behind the stunt, said they wanted to show support for Belarusian human rights activists and embarrass the country's military, a pillar of Lukashenko's power.
"Hopefully, we've made people more aware in the world and that there will be more people supporting Belarusian people," Frey said.
The Swedes' yearlong preparations involved learning how to pilot the three-seater Jodel aircraft and purchasing the plane. They financed the ?150,000 ($184,500) cost of the stunt with their work in a small advertising agency.
The pair said they were inspired by similar protests staged by Belarusian activists, who have at times arranged plush toys in such a way that they appeared to be protesting the regime.
"Our campaign was a campaign in support of that. An airlift in support of the teddy bears, from teddy bears around the world," Mazetti said.
The flight began and ended at the Pociunai airfield in southern Lithuania. Thunderstorms that day may have made it harder for Belarus to scramble aircraft to intercept their plane, said Mazetti, though he acknowledged they risked being shot down.
"We flew an airplane at 50 meters, that's 150 feet, for one and a half hours inside Belarus. Of course we were aware of the risks. But it was a calculated risk and we thought we needed to take that risk ourselves ? we couldn't hire anyone," he told The Associated Press during an interview in Berlin, where the two are currently staying. "But we will not do it again tomorrow, if I put it that way."
Authorities in Belarus have also arrested a journalism student who posted teddy bear photos on his personal website and a real estate agent who offered an apartment to the Swedes. The two men were accused of assisting border violators and face up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Lukashenko has ruled Belarus, a nation of 10 million, since 1994, stifling dissent and independent media. He also has boasted about the capabilities of a joint air defense system that Belarus has formed with Russia, saying it provides a reliable shield against purported threats from NATO.
Valery Karbalevich, an independent Minsk-based political analyst, said purging the generals might be a way to save face in front of Moscow. The Kremlin may use the incident to try to put a Russian general in charge of the joint air defense system, he said.
"It looks like Moscow is cranking up pressure and demanding an answer as to why the much-acclaimed air defense system is riddled with holes," Karbalevich said.
Anatoly Lebedko, the head of Belarus' opposition United Civil Party, warned that Lukashenko may use the incident to crack down on dissidents in the run-up to a parliamentary election next month.
In May 1987, another amateur pilot, Matthias Rust from Germany, made a similarly dashing flight into the closely-guarded Soviet airspace, landing his light Cessna plane next to the Kremlin. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev responded by firing the defense minister and many other representatives of the top military brass.

Slower, longer sperm outcompete faster rivals, surprising finding shows
ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2012) ? When it comes to sperm meeting eggs in sexual reproduction, conventional wisdom holds that the fastest swimming sperm are most likely to succeed in their quest to fertilize eggs. That wisdom was turned upside down in a new study of sperm competition in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), which found that slower and/or longer sperm outcompete their faster rivals.
The study, recently published online in Current Biology and forthcoming in print on Sept. 25, was done by a team of scientists led by corresponding author Stefan L?pold, a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. The team made the discovery using fruit flies that were genetically altered so that the heads of their sperm glow fluorescent green or red under the microscope. The fruit flies, developed by biology Professor John Belote, enable researchers to observe sperm in real time inside the female reproductive tract.
"Sperm competition is a fundamental biological process throughout the animal kingdom, yet we know very little about how ejaculate traits determine which males win contests," says L?pold, a Swiss National Science Foundation Fellow working in the laboratory of biology Professor Scott Pitnick. "This is the first study that actually measures sperm quality under competitive conditions inside the female, allowing us to distinguish the traits that are important in each of the reproductive phases."
The research is also significant because the scientists studied naturally occurring variations in sperm traits, rather than manipulating the test populations for specific traits. After identifying and isolating groups of males with similar ejaculate traits that remained constant across multiple generations, the scientists mated single females with pairs of males from the different groups. "This approach allowed us to simultaneously investigate multiple ejaculate traits and also observe how sperm from one male change behavior depending upon that of rival sperm," L?pold says.
Female fruit flies mate about every three days. Sperm from each mating swim through the female bursa into a storage area until eggs are released. Eggs travel from the ovaries into the bursa to await the sperm. However, sperm battles actually take place within the storage area. After each mating, new sperm try to toss sperm from previous matings out of storage. The female then ejects the displaced sperm from the reproductive system, eliminating the ejected sperm from the mating game. The researchers observed that longer and slower-moving sperm were better at displacing their rivals and were also less likely to be ejected from storage than their more agile counterparts.
"The finding that longer sperm were more successful is consistent with earlier studies," L?pold says. "However, the finding that slower sperm also have an advantage is counterintuitive."
Why slower sperm have an advantage is still open to speculation. "It could be that, when swimming back and forth in storage, slower sperm hit the exit less frequently and are therefore less likely to be pushed out," L?pold says. "Or, because sperm velocity is dependent on the density of sperm within the narrow storage area, it could be that velocity isn't really the target of sexual selection in fruit flies, but is rather a consequence of the amount of sperm packed into the storage organ."
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Swiss National Science Foundation funded the study.
